Why not indeed! Seriously, I don't know how mink fur fibers compare to beaver for felting. It is a soft fur generally, but I don't know whether it has the barbs to felt well. I do know it has long coarse hairs that would need to be removed. That is done with nutria though, if I remember...
Location could be an issue too. Here in sunny California, I rarely find decent vintage felt hats at shops, and when I do they are usually overpriced. Most of my collection comes from eBay. Some times I wish I lived in Danbury or Chicago. MiamiBruno also seems to be well-placed for finding...
Well, not for many years probably, but vintage men's hats often have green verdigris from brass (I believe ?) ferrules, so I went with steel roll pins to try to avoid that.
(Didn't see Olė'a post - what he said).
I hope so. I've got a pretty cool idea for some metal tollikers too, but that is one thing I'm going to hold my mud on, at least for now. If it works, I'll post photos though.
+1 x2 re HS' work and H4's tools.
The bell spinner and giant rounding jack are stunning. Your collection is truly awesome. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Bought three of these. I plan to make some foot tollikers with them and some hickory cabinet leftovers. They won't be antique, but they'll "feel" antique & work well, I think.
Will post photos when I've got them done.
Another, better price. "Panda" usually describes a kitten finish type felt, but it could be pounced if it's a little too furry - doesn't look like it though. Probably a good felt.

Early unreeded Strat at a great BIN price. I love sellers who don't do their homework!
Marked size 7, but we'll see if it fits my tweener 7 1/8. If not, maybe one of you gents will benefit...
Finally got a legit antique hatter's spinner at a decent price. I've built a couple from candle holders and converted a heavy block style millinery one to a pretty close match, but I can't wait to get the real deal for comparison & dimensions.
If you buy a good quality western hat (you want a high crown) in the right color, and pay for shipping and materials (ribbon, sweatband as needed) I'd be happy to do what I did for TJ at no labor cost. I'm only going to offer such deals to loungers a few more times, so don't stay paralyzed for...
Good comments thus far. These hats are pretty rare, but size. & condition & case matter a lot. No one wants a Stetson 100 with a bunch of through & through moth bites in the crown, and few wear very small sizes. I personally don't care if it's a western. If the felt is sound & of good...
+1. Make sure you wet universally to avoid water stains, shape when it's dried a little bit for best "clay-like" quality & wear until fully dry. It will look good & conform well.
You will be pleased with the quality of JW's sweatbands. They are top notch - very soft & durable, and cut to flare to your head shape. Better by far than those generally available, and a good price to boot. The best part is that he's got no minimum order, so you don't have to order a gross to...
An aside - I have read that the "beaver" finish is created by painstakingly working long fibers into a hat body. If you think about the hours that went into Fed's hat - first to create the beaver finish and then to convert it to a more traditional finish - and the skill level required to do...
Wow! Quite a change. I believe Bond posted pre-trim photos, but I did not realize the depth of the transformation until now. It actually looks pretty good. I don't know what the shave & haircut cost, or how pressing your need was, but you probably did OK overall, given the general rise in...
Returning to theme a bit, with the heavy "Canton" flanging felt (I hope) that I purchased on eBay. I went with natural. Auction photo. Beats the unnamed hatter's price by tens of dollars a yard.
"FABULOUS THICK CANTON Flannel backed Twill Natural & White Fabric 100% cotton[natural on...
