Well, I honestly don't know. I've never used either. They were too rusty until yesterday. The Mahoney is often identified as a polishing iron, and has diamond shaped divots in the bottom. I've sanded it, but am still having trouble getting rust out of the divots. It is rounded front/back and...

As Olė pointed out, the bottoms are often rounded on hatter's irons, front to back and /or side to side :

Olė, I think we are on the same page. I think you are also right about my word choice. As for irons, here are some examples. I am still looking for the little oval iron. The two on the far left are "standard" sad irons. They are larger, heavier & wider, with sharp tips. The next one is...

I believe this is also called cotton "duck," but I don't know if that term is used on your side of the pond.

Thanks, but I'm just another hat lover trying to learn as much as I can and give something back to the forum that's taught me so much. The Tumwater blog was recommended by my buddy Terry Jones, I just passed it on. I am looking forward to the liner tutorial!

Well, you'd better brace yourself for a brain dump of what I've learned on the subject (which may well be corrected or enlarged upon by those who know more). Sad irons represented real and every day practical technology at the time and they were made and were used for many different tasks...

Candlestick holder spinner conversions. The broader based one is shorter & more stable. I'll be adding a wider base to the other, which was the prototype. Having no boiled linseed oil handy, I oiled the spindle with teak oil, which is also good choice for hardwood because it "hardens in...

Hatters irons found at an antique store today for $5 each. I'm confident they are not toys because they have adult sized handles. Still have to sand rust off of one .

Quite a variance , especially when one considers the giant that Oliver posted.

I find no maker's mark. This appears to be a much newer version than the one that takes a carbon steel blade. Wood looks to be poplar.

Received the new rounding jack today. Pleasantly surprised to learn it takes old flat razor blades - pulled out to demonstrate. The ruler is interesting - it is imprinted onto the body, the rest of which has been stained. I've photographed the hardware - maybe it will help some of you guys:
