My goodness, Tanya Tucker! I’m pretty sure she was my first true love, especially once I figured out she was only a couple of years older than me. ;):) She has lived through some rough patches in her life, but I believe she has done a pretty good job of living her life on her terms.
I would add, if you can't do the naptha bath that Belfastboy suggested on all the hats pretty quickly, you should stick them in the deep freeze for 2-3 days to make sure any moth eggs or larvae are killed, before you bring them into the house for any length of time. As someone who owns a few...
Interesting "photos" - thanks for sharing!
I know nothing about the tintype process, so I'm curious why the bottom image is a "mirror" or "reverse" image judging by the Sharps carbine, while the top image with the signs obviously is not. What is the difference, please? I remember some debate...
I was able to pick out "Gentry" as well, so I searched the names together and came up with this:

Looks like the photo may have been taken in Asheville, NC - not far across the mountains from my southwest Virginia home.
Interesting photo, thank you!
What I couldn't figure out was that dark area on the instep. Just a darker piece of leather, I reckon? It gets clouded with the heel and I couldn't really tell what is what. I'm always curious how older boots and shoes are made. Thanks for posting the photo!
That's an interesting photo, for several reasons! Intriguing chair design, and I'm pretty curious about the boots he's wearing, too. Not quite enough detail/contrast to get a good handle on how they are made.
I've heard of that rope trick, but lacking any vehicles with spoked wheels, I have yet to be able to try it. ;) I hate salted roads for any vehicle, but it would be a real shame to get that one all crusty and rusty.
That's very generous, thank you very much. But Rick deserves the credit - he was the one that took my "wish list" and made it into a fine hat. I sure hope you get as much outdoor enjoyment out of it as I have out of mine. This was the first beaver hat I owned, and it sure does beat wool felt for...
:D Honestly, I have no idea. I generally don't keep up with celebrities, and haven't watched much TV except for the news in the last 15 years or more (and am about to give up on the news, too). Cold Mountain could very well be the last movie I saw in the theater, but I'm not positive about that...
Yes, indeed, it is Jude Law in Cold Mountain. Good eye, Tukwila. My favorite character was feisty Ruby, played by Renee Zellwegger with a reasonably decent Appalachian accent:
I figured it was okay to post this here, since she is wearing a hat... ;)
Having always been taught to take my hat off when eating, I've always found that painting interesting. There are several threads here on hat etiquette so I won't belabor the point, but at least at that location in the 40s it must have been common to "dine" with your hat on. Or maybe they're just...
I couldn't get your link to work; my search pulled up this video from 2008:
In this video, Adam Steffi is the mandolin player - great big guy playing that little bitty instrument makes it fun to watch! He, Barry Bales (the bass player in the video), and Dan were all once part of Allison...
Very sorry to hear about that incident, Bill, and condolences to those who lost acquaintances and loved ones.
God bless those that take a stand against evil, whether at home or abroad, in whatever capacity that they protect our lives and freedoms.
I'm honestly not sure if they ship to Texas by boat or plane. I can tell you that living in Virginia, the hats come to Customs in New York, and then it often takes a week or more to get them through Customs and then to me via USPS. From what I have read here, the time the hat sits in Customs can...
If you ordered from a US vendor, it should have reached you by now. If you ordered from Australia, two weeks puts you in the "could be any day now" range, except that the holiday shipping season will be slowing things down a little more.
Good luck!
