Johnson Shut-Ins (the rock formation ... not the people) on the Black River in Reynolds County, Missouri, 1902. I broke my foot back around 1980 after goofing around in this natural water slide. Still flares up 'til this day.

American Barbecue

The tradition of charring a bark on the outside of a poor cut of meat but rendering the inside tender & juicy.

Photograph shows a barbeque during the Civil War on the corner of Church and Belews Creek streets, Salem, NC. Lots of hat styles lined up.

My BBQ hat since about the turn of this century. It smells better than it looks! Just what Outlet hats are made for.

A little dry & brittle now but it has earned the right to live out its natural life, doing what it does.

Brushy Bill {William H} Roberts

Ol' Brushy Bill sure made the rounds.
Two fellow frauds, J. Frank Dalton & Brushy Bill Roberts.

IMG_7039.JPG

Early in his "career" Brushy Bill Roberts claimed to be the real Jesse Woodson James. Later he met & befriended J. Frank Dalton who also claimed to be the real Jesse Woodson James. Neither man had the missing left hand finger tip the real James had, & were apparently unwilling to shoot theirs off to reinforce their masquerade. No James imposter, living or dead & dug up has ever had the missing finger tip on their left hand. Such a simple matter!

Brushy Bill next claimed to have been a member of the Jesse James gang. Later yet he would claim to be the real Billy the Kid.

Jesse Woodson James was born Sept 5, 1847.

J. Frank Dalton was born on March 8, 1848.

Henry McCarty "Billy the Kid" was born in NY in 1859.

It has been documented that Ollie P. "Brushy Bill" Roberts was born Aug 26, 1879.

In the above pic taken sometime in 1942 Brushy Bill Roberts was 63 yrs old. If alive Billy the Kid would have been 83 yrs old.

And facial forensics has debunked Roberts as the Kid, too, based on a number of measurements of facial features.

electric streetcars (circa 1887). Springfield was one of the first five cities in the US to have electric streetcars.

What were the other cities?
Deadwood, SD ranks high on a lot of lists of firsts because of the gold. Don't know where this would rank but they didn't have electric trolleys until 1902.

Some other Deadwood milestones:

1874-1875: Gold struck

1876: First wagon train arrived around July 12, 1876 with 100 passengers.

1876: The first telegraph lines reach Deadwood on December 1.

1878: The first telephone lines in Deadwood installed on March 9, just one year after telephone service to the White House.

1879: City government controls the use of opium by taxing and licensing the opium dens.

1883: The first electric lights are turned on in December.

1888: Construction begins on the Deadwood Central Railway, which connects to the town of Lead.

1890: The Fremont, Elkhorn, and Missouri Valley Railroad is the first passenger train to arrive in Deadwood.

1902: An electric trolley line that runs between Deadwood and Lead is established.

1905: In May Nathan Franklin "purchased the first modern automobile to reach Deadwood, a dark green Model F Cadillac.”
