Thanks, gentlemen. I'm keenly anticipating the return of cooler weather so I can start wearing my scarves again! That Brill has a nice length to it as well.
BR: I find all my scarves in local thrift stores but I suspect they may be more common up here in chilly Toronto than in lovely, warm...
It's been a while since I posted here but I've found some nice older scarves lately.
This one is a nice weighty rayon...no label, though.
A nice, older Forsth.
And a first for me...an older scarf by Brill.
Found a copy of Carl Hiaasen's new book, Bad Monkey, today at a thrift store. It's only been out for two months! Had to lay Tom Sharpe aside (it was a re-read anyway) and dive into this one.
Browsing through the Value Village on Lawrence this afternoon I found three Mayser fedoras...one grey, one black and one brown. They were in excellent condition...not very old, I'd say.
I would have bought them all ($20 each) except for the fact that they were size 7 7/8...huge! Four...
Thanks 1930artdeco. I was lucky...I only had one other person bidding against me. I had to concede some items to him...the blue RCAF tunic and pants and some flashes...but I did get the best stuff (in my opinion, at least!). I actually stopped actively collecting militaria 25 years ago when...
Da Vinci's Inquest...I don't know why I didn't watch this show when it first ran. A truly exceptional show...best writing and acting I've seen for quite some time.
I got really lucky again. Obtained these in an auction sale dispersing the estate of the fellow's widow. He was one of three brothers, all of whom volunteered for the RCAF in the second world war. Two of them came back...one of his brothers was killed while flying with RAF Coastal Command in...
Stretching one size: never had a problem.
Two sizes: it's a good idea to cut the stitching on the back of the sweatband. The rest of the stitching is usually not disturbed. Results, however can vary with the quality of the hat.
Three sizes: not a good thing.
Oldest...probably some Ordovician period trilobites I found near Craigleith, Ontario....400 million years old, or so.
Oldest man made...some first century Roman coins.
Still looking! The brown scarf has some nice age to it, but it is in excellent condition. I'm on the verge of doing a cull of my scarves. I find that I gravitate to my older ones and very rarely wear the newer scarves.
John Sandford's Dead Watch,
Forrester's Lieutenant Hornblower (decided to re-read the series...it's been a while),
and William Manchester's A World Lit Only By Fire.
That hockey scarf is quite different, Two Types, but I love that green Tootal, tassels or no tassels.
A couple of recent thrift store finds:
No maker but a nice heavy rayon fabric:
Again, no maker but a lovely silk scarf...much more elegant than it looks in the photo:
The quest continues.
Just read through this thread and thought I'd add a few titles that no one has mentioned:
Fires on the Plain (1959)
Devil’s Brigade (1968)
Cockleshell Heroes (1955)
In Which We Serve (1942)
Corvette K-225 (1943)
One of our Aircraft is Missing (1942)
and I don't think I noticed Stalag 17...
I usually have a bottle of Makers Mark around but it's running low. I noticed some bottles of Elijah Craig 12 year old in the local liquor store...has anyone tried it?
Murder on the Orient Express (1974) and Flame over India (1959) come to mind. Interestingly enough, Lauren Bacall is in both films.
On the lighter side, there's Silver Streak (1976) with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor.
