Don't envy. Do! Buy yourself the instruments, some yarn, a book, and go to it. Getting started costs practically nothing. :)
My mother could teach you a lot: needlepoint, knitting (by hand and on a machine), crocheting, tatting, sewing, embroidery (thread and liquid). . . The list goes on...

I've never been in an emergency situation like that, but, just in case, I've always seen myself pacing about outside in the early morning dark wearing slippers, nightshirt and nightcap of matching material, and eyeglasses. Maybe a big, black moustache and a cigar, too. lol
