Out of the Humidor: Weekly Cigar Corner: Current Discussion: General Smoking 01/26/07

I find this discussion of humidity quite intersting and, might offer that I have had inconsistent readings from various hygrometers over the years which migh contribute to the differences of opinion. For most of my cigars the are stored in a large humidor with two separate elements (top and...

    who belongs to a Lodge

I have been a Freemason for nearly fifteen years now. I was raised in a lodge in New York and I have to say that my experience for the most part is that most masons are quite open about their membership and the charities we support. Among our friends, the only aspect of lodge we don't openly...

    PBS Mystery! Foyles War Series

I recently purchased a television and subscribed to cable after years without. Foyles War, Miss Marple and others on Mystery! are among the few shows that keep me from cancelling cable and giving away the TV. I love some of the suits and hats in the show. Has anyone else noticed that...

    Lime green pants!

I voted yes. The color is bold and interesting but not outrageous - I might pass if they were really bright or shiny... In summertime, especially for outdoor parties, I like to wear colorful pants with a navy blazer.

    Golden era computer fonts...?

Unfortunately, some (IMHO) of the nicest Golden Era typesets or, of any era, carry negative baggage due to their use by the Germans during the war. There are also some wonderful deco typesets - I'll need to try to look up the names for you as my knowledge of fonts and typesets is sadly lacking...

La M?¥me aka La Vie En Rose

bump Have others had the opportunity to see La Vie en Rose? I don't go out to the movies very often but, I am very tempted by this one. These days I wait until they come out on DVD. I haven't noticed listings anywhere other than NYC (LA and SF are on the other coast ;) ).

White Mischief in 1940s Kenya -= the Killer Revealed

Cookie, Thank you for the articles. I really enjoyed that movies as well. I saw it in just the right theater. The movie theater in the Plaza Hotel where they served proper refreshments followed by dinner at Harry Cipriani in the Sherry Netherland, along with the obligatory browse (pre-movie)...

Aftershave : That nostalgic true masculine smell!

There are a few "classic" scents still out there but, to my nose, nothing says man's inner sanctum or masculine more than the smell of cigars/pipe, leather, cognac/brandy and the stables/kennels. To re-create this I have on occasion taken out an old saddle, some saddle soap and after cleaning...

Are Classy Restaurants Lowering Dress Code Standards in Your Area?

I do find it unfortunate that the few restaurants that do have dress codes are not enforcing them. Part of the experience of going to a formal dining room in a beautifully decorated restaurant is escapism - the opportunity to get away from the daily grind. T-shirts and baseball caps look so...

    Men's Espadrills...

A little pricey but Ben Silver sells them (look a bit like Espadrilles, etc?) and Stubbs & Wootton also had nice ones. I am however, have more trouble finding them in the past few years than I did in the past.

What did your grandparents pack for personal protection in the Golden Era?

In answer to the original question, after serving in WWI my granfather preferred the M1911 and the S&W Model 1917 revolver in .45 Caliber , but also had an older Browning model M1900. But for serious home protection the short barrelled 12-gauge Winchester 97.

Foods I can't find in my present location and regional specialties.

A regional dish I miss from family visits is Schlutzkrapfen. These are spinach stuffed pasta pockets, served like "ravioli," without tomato sauce only topped with melted butter and Parmesan cheese. And, while not impossible to find, increasingly difficult to find is Wiener Schnitzel or...

La M?¥me aka La Vie En Rose

I have been anxiously awaiting this film as well. If it is at all good I will have to buy the DVD when available.

Foods I can't find in my present location and regional specialties.

I have a lot of family around Mt. Carmel, PA and Philadelphia. I guess I'm a Yankee, born in NYC - but some folks back in PA might not think of themselves that way.;)

Foods I can't find in my present location and regional specialties.

We had a great little "diner" in The Plains, VA and scrapple from the local abbatoir was on the menu. When people driving through would ask "what is scrapple" one of the volunteer firemen would inevitable reply, "everything but the oink ma'am, everything but the oink."

Should tobacco usage scene's be deleted?

You and I do agree on this topic. My choice of words could have been better. I used "need" where I should have used "want" or "look for", and in place of everyone, "many" or "most." My impression is that folks on this board tend to be independent and willing to go their own way. And, that...

    The I'm-too-good-for-this-job Attitude

Op Ed impressions from a manager - no stats, etc. A sense of entitlement seems to make it difficult for many folks to accept their current jobs, roles or circumstances. To complicate matters, while being "too good" for a particular job is IMHO inappropriate, we do see quite a few...

Foods I can't find in my present location and regional specialties.

There is a long list, but one regional specialty (mid-atlanitc) I haven't seen in years is scrapple.

Should tobacco usage scene's be deleted?

Caution Rant Ahead IMHO PC is a very slippery slope. Who says what thoughts and speach are acceptable? Should it be enforced by industry, NGOs, the courts or the legislature? Should non-PC speach or, better yet, thoughts be actionable? Once upon a time a person might be judged on their...
