I recall reading (can't remember where, maybe in an old FL thread?) that in the movies hats were worn high in front so that the actors' faces wouldn't be obscured by shadows; that people in the "real world" often wore them lower than what we see in the old movies. If that's true then our ideas...
Actually, I think it makes good sense to tag according to the garment's exact measurements. That way, if the buyer knows his own body measurements he can choose the garment size according to his own preference as to snug vs. roomy fit. However, it works only so long as it's understood by all...
I know, Andy, it's about as likely as putting a message in a bottle, tossing it in the ocean, and hoping someone on another continent will read it.
What I find so exasperating is that achieving reasonably accurate size labeling just isn't rocket science. There's a hat store in the Boston...
Hat sizing is woefully inconsistent, as many have reported here on the FL. (I'm speaking here of hats from the larger makers, not the small custom makers.)
Why don't manufacturers measure each hat's size after it's finished, and then stick in a size label that corresponds to that particular...
My Akubra Squatter is my go-to storm hat. I've worn it for extended periods of time in the most torrential downpours. Hasn't harmed it a bit.
Personally I like some taper, and WISH it were the case that getting my Squatter soaked would cause the crown to taper ... but it hasn't! (At least...
I'm in between a 56 and 57, but much closer to 56. The folks at Everything Australian, from whom I purchased my Squatter, unhesitatingly advised that I order the 57, which I did. They were right. When brand new, I used a small amount of foam sizing tape, but within a matter of weeks the 57...
Great jacket! Shoulders and torso look like a perfect fit, as if it were custom made for you. Arm length looks fine with arms by your sides. Will you be using it for riding a bike? How is it when you reach your arms forward?
Seb,
Believe it or not, Vanson have the dimensions of many of their jackets posted on their web site (you need to click the link below the product description). Here's a link to the Enfield's dimensions:

As to weight, I don't own an...
onstar,
I've seen both types of Vanson leather in person at their factory recently. Here's what I can report:
While they call the Firenze "medium" weight, it's pretty heavy. The "competition" weight is VERY heavy.
The Firenze, while not a smooth finish, can be rather shiny as well...
The Florsheim Duckie Brown's look amazing ... but following the link I noticed that they are more than 3 times the price ($475 vs. $140) of the Florsheim Gaffney about which Feraud originally enquired. Anybody have additional suggestions for nice brogue boots closer to the Gaffney's price point...
I've tried the Gaffney on, and the quality is okay but not great. Also, they're rather heavy. I ended up going for the Johnston and Murphy Hattington wingtip Boot. The quality of leather is much higher, IMHO. Very thick and pliable. Also has a lug sole, though the design is such that you don;t...
Hi onstar,
I've just been out to Vanson's factory a couple of times over the past few weeks.
They have hundreds of jackets and competition racing suits on display in their showroom.
You're right, they are indeed very slow to reply to emails, and their web site is amateurish. Still, the...
