Sell it or return it to the manufacturer and ask if the collar can be completely replaced. Perhaps a material/knit stand-collar could be installed, but I don't think a shawl collar lends itself to much re-shaping/cutting.
"...most ridiculous ... yet?' suggests that there are other ridiculous designs - I think the Canuck, for example, is great and there are several other designs that are similarly good (the Kensington, etc.).
I had a Teamster in seal jerky that was just a bit too big. I have a work coat which is great (russet badalassi) and a Maxwell in tumbled cordovan HH. Overall, the Maxwell is my favourite for fit, length and wearability. With a cotton drill lining, no action back and sizing to 42 (I'd take a...
It's the Telegraph. It's supposed to make you wear tweeds and straw hats in the summer.
Wear what you like. I wouldn't take clothing advice from the British press, even if it was on the other side.
The suppleness and ease of wear would go to goat overall, I think, but as we are talking about long wear periods and jackets made to last decades it is hard to say. My full-weight HH jackets are comfortable-ish, the mid-weight ones are more comfortable, the goat one is warmest soonest.
It has a drier hand and it will take a long while to develop a patina and people claim, too, that it is less water-resistant; it has few supporters here, but I reckon it's an ideal weight for daily wear, that it's 'warmer' (as is goat) and that it has a great grain. Next order, a Plainsman...

The battered steer is your best move for drape. My Badalassi jacket is lovely, but is a thick hide that will take a lot of work to hang well (like Vicenza or goat do). A lot of people are less enthusiastic about Vicenza, but I am really happy with its drape, light(ish) weight and general...
I definitely prefer no gussets in jackets: they look ok, but they seem (to me) to be a repair waiting to happen. On the other hand, I haven't had any noticeable mobility problems in my jackets.
