Spray Shellac. Used on the inside of the crown and underside of the brim. You might have to lightly sand the felt afterwards. I've used it...it works because shellac is what they use to stiffen felt.

I have to agree with Scotrace. Even the qualities of the black and white image has the characteristics of later era photographic technology, along with fashions unquestionably 1930s. Still, a great hat study!

Thanks for the comments on the Stet, and for all the hats posted afterward by the rest of you Loungers, you all wear them well and look sharp in fedoras and vintage wear. That Amish topper, J.T. donned is in a class of its own barn raising chic.

Can't thank you enough for this thread, the information and the terrific pictures! I've been searching for this kind of information and visuals. BTW, if you ever decide to part with that L-2A, well, I know someone who would love to help you out with that.;) Thanks again.

The jacket has arrived and it fits like a glove! Now, the leather; not suede, it looks like leather that has had its finish rubbed off consistently over the whole jacket, which those in the know might call 'distressed', but I'm not sure what to call it, with some grain visible, and I swear I...
The Mallorys here are handsome, and the combination with the jacket looks great, making me glad I got an A-2 style jacket recently to wear with mine. Must be the "Indy" iconography, but not necessarily what I would be going for. Not saying the "Indy" association is bad, just that the...
Well...I'll wait until I get it in front of me, but I like the richer tones. I'm just a tweaker at heart like you, Wil. The fun is in the modding.

Thanks, Thunder and Wil. If it is suede, or just distressed, I wonder if I coud successfully dye it a bit darker. I found some products on-line for that purpose. I wonder how it would turn out.[huh]

Not sure. It didn't mention suede. But, agree that it looks like suede. I hope it isn't, but in any case, it was cheap. I like the look of it, too, Edward. Thanks for your post.

Thank you, Scott. That picture isn't even very good. At least I think the hat suffers two things: 1) Bad angle and cheap phone camera, and 2) My face under it in a "stylish" blue t-shirt:rolleyes:.
If "long-ovaling" a hat isn't always successful, pardon the risk of asking a dumb(rille) question, Scott, but how does one actually manufacture a Long Oval hat to begin with? What do they do to keep the brim from deforming. I can't believe I don't know this.
