My guess is that they don't watch classic movies or TV, and the only "historical photo" they're familiar with is the iconic Ann Frank portrait photo. It's their only point of reference.

I love "Call of Cthulhu", and everything those brilliant, scary filmmakers have done. They're incredible, and putting the tale into a silent film milieu was a stroke of absolute genius.
I saw this just a few months ago. I remember being most struck by the way society... changed. The way English so quickly seemed to degenerate into some sort of self-generating pidgin. That and the apparent mediaeval society that developed in the aftermath.
