Thank you very much! There is no need to play "Misty" for me - I fully intend to continue participating as fully as I am permitted. Terry, Humanshoes, Bond, Kingrat & others have plenty of talent and will keep things interesting. I can still talk hats and - like Voltaire's Candide - be...
Snagged this pretty rare Dobbs Double Life in a larger size (7 3/8). I love these hats - it's like having 5-6 hats in one. It's too big for me, and pretty stingy, but I just couldn't pass it up. These are auction photos...
Bruce, you need a hat saver in the Batmobile!
Seriously though, there must be some way you are handling, storing it, or wearing it that is causing a brim crease. Photos would help. Reshaping the brim by hand with steam would help but flanging & ironing is recommended.
Long oval blocks can be made to order, and were available in times past. I have a set of vintage long oval band blocks, one long oval crown block (7 1/8) and several LO flanges (Lundberg of SF). Based on experimentation and comparison of the blocks I have, it seems the LO is a narrower version...
It depends. This has been discussed loads.
Assuming the stretch doesn't ruin the sweat, the crown needs to be worked to remove the sweatband mark if the resizing is done with a stretcher block, and if course you've slightly changed the profile.
Resizing also can be by re blocking though...
Frank, steam won't help that much if your hatband is too loose. Attach the bottom ends first, then the top of one side. Pull the ribbon tight against the body and if necessary, put a slight fold in it to take out the slack and have it "dive" under the bow (where the bow will be). The fold...
I just received a Black Sheep customized Dobbs 20 from Lotsahats that is destined for another lounger. It shows very good workmanship.
The hand stitching is very nice on the sweatband junction, and the hidden stitches in the bow, and the bow itself are extremely well executed. The ostrich...
Well, Joao, I am also a fan of this model, but can only state the (somewhat) obvious: "BR" stands for Byer-Rolnick, the name of Resistol's parent company and of its (then) owners.
Hats are my bag, and I've been similarly surprised by the great variety of styles offered by the premier hatters in this time frame. Fascinating post. Thanks for sharing!
I bought cedar fence boards because they are rough cut, still fairly green & aromatic. I paneled the back of a door with hooks, and cut the rest into blocks, which I put in my hat cupboards & boxes. So far so good.
I've been driving all day, glad to see you guys approve ;-). I wore this one until I left for the mountains - it is my new favorite hat, but switched to a Stetson OR that I was less afraid to damage in the woods.
Alan, I will post the block sticker when I get home.
