Terry, it's a protein stain, like blood, I guess, so the same process would probably work. I've had pretty good results with Scout cleaner, generally, but make sure you get the light colored cleaner for light colored hats, etc.
Blood spot removal
You can buy stiff bristled brushes at dry cleaning supply outlets, or search on eBay for dry cleaning brushes. I believe this is what is meant by a "penetrating" brush...
Joao, your white XDoubleX is in the block.
I got it pretty clean, generally. I'm still hopeful I'll eventually get that staining from the old crease, and some sort of spill mark on the brim out.
I believe someday you will, my friend. But I also think there is not world enough and time for you or me to have all of the hats we covet.
I sometimes think we would all be well advised to do as you have just done, and wear the hats we have to the beach while we still have enough vigor to turn...
Joao,
Please read my note above.
You are correct that there is one less Resistol 100. That _is_ sad, but there would have been one less Resistol 100 in any event. This hat was more garbage than anything else when I bought it and put a little bit of my soul in it.
I'm more Hercules than...
Ah, I understand now Joao. Yeah, I blocked it at a size that let me make a fedora, thinking there would be a more ready market. Your white hat goes on the block next though, so don't be discouraged...
Joao, the 100% beaver dress hat I posted (same color scheme as the replacement hat for NewJack) has a 1 1/2" brim and is a size 7-7 1/8. Based in your expressed tastes, it will never be something you want. ;-)
Making it a size 7 1/4 would leave probably a 1 1/4 brim. Not your style...
The...
There would be no brim left on the 100% beaver dress hat if the crown were any bigger ;-)
Unfortunately, the conversion did turn out quite badly. The lesson I learned will last much longer than the embarrassment, though, and I don't mind sharing this "misadventures in hatting" story to try to...
Richard: Thanks for your kind words. To borrow a phrase from Hell on Wheels" the "moral mathematics" was very simple. It was my mistake and my responsibility to make it right.
I also just happened to have more hat making stuff than I had scratch ;-)
I am also very pleased with the...
Soon Harv, soon! The list is shortening.
When I get the renovations in the queue done - including yours, TJ's and one other fellows, I'm going to start building hats from the TopHatters bodies & trimmings.
I've done quite a few renovations & conversions, but this was the first finished hat from scratch (I haven't finished another I started some time back).
Here are two new hats, and the aforementioned cautionary tale.
First hat was a western conversion.
Very thick, heavily lacquered brim. It came out looking good, except...
I obviously didn't get the brim soft enough before flanging, because it creased/cracked when I ironed it on...
Thanks Terry! It would have needed to be trimmed & rebound to make a smaller sized fedora, and I just couldn't see changing the original body if I could make it work as something marketable without doing so.
Amen to that Bond! I recently had a misadventure in hatting that I'll share as a cautionary tale about western conversions - but not until after I finish taking care of the fallout later today...
Teaser:
A vintage Resistol Beaver 100 western that I'm converting to a Whippet style hat. This is blocked at 7 1/2. It has very soft felt - not nearly as lacquered or pressed as the Stetson 100's I've worked with.
This is a true rescue hat. It was a small sized western with a couple of...
