    What Are You Reading

Just finished Richard van Emden's The Quick and the Dead: Fallen Soldiers and Their Families in the Great War. Excellent read...answered some questions I've always had about the grave registration unit and the early days of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Now, for a change of pace...

    Your favorite movie quotes

In my opinion, still the greatest insult in film...from Casablanca: Ugarte: "You despise me don't you?" Rick: "If I gave you any thought, I probably would."

    Vintage Phones

This is my D-mount 202 with an F1 handset made by Northern Electric in 1939. It has a separate subset for the network and bell. It is my every day phone and works great. I sometimes change it for a 1941 model 302 for some variety (also works very well). I have a 202 with one of the original...

Who got the oldest computer-contest! ;-)

Power Mac G4 from 2005...still going strong. I've replaced the battery a couple of times though. My primary computer, however, is a 2010 MacBook Pro...it's a lot easier to open and repair than the G4. First one I used was a Commodore PET at work...no hard drive, no disc drive...and it took at...

    What Are You Reading

I'm a fan of Montsarrat's sea stories, particularly The Cruel Sea. Three Corvettes was excellent as well. The Master Mariner was a departure for him but was a truly interesting read...the unfinished second volume, not so much. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I have read one of his political...

    Vintage Phones

If you rotate the finger wheel all the way from the operator position, it should take 1 second to return. It that's the case...don't touch the works of the dial, it's working fine. If you do decide to lubricate, be careful of the governor...that's the small open brass cylinder with something...

You Know You're in Canada When...

I'm surprised this one hasn't popped up yet. You know you're in Canada when the annual professional football championship (the Grey Cup) is played in an open stadium, in late November, in sub zero temperatures (celsius) ...and it's snowing.

What was the last TV show you watched?

Took some old DVDs to a not-so-local used DVD store and came out with Season 2 of Ripper Street (I've seen seasons 1 and 3), Season 1 of Peaky Blinders (haven't seen this one at all but everyone raves about it), Season 1 of The Last Kingdom (same comment) and Season 5 of Homeland. Don't know...

    Armistice Day

My wife and I did the Highway of Heroes thing several times...used to keep a flag in my car for that purpose. We usually stood on a bridge across the 401 in Pickering. Glad we don't have to do that anymore. That's an impressive memorial in Stratford...looks like a work by Walter Allward.

I see a lot of binoculars in thrift stores. Most are quite low end, often in desperate need of repair. This pair, however, was a pretty exciting find, at least for a WW1 student like myself. They are 'graticulated' so were probably issued to an artillery observer.

What was the last TV show you watched?

In a similar vein, I just finished the 8 instalments in the Hornblower series staring Ioan Gruffudd. Sure wish they had made more.

    Your TOP Cagney movie . . .?

Absolutely. I find that scene chilling and unnerving every time I watch it.

    What Are You Reading

Finished "Field Grey" and have started 'March Violets' by the same author, Philip Kerr. It's set in Berlin in the mid-30s. Interesting writer. I was trying to describe his approach to my wife and the best I could come up with was that he was sort of a cross between Chandler and John Le Carre...

    What Are You Reading

'Field Gray' by Philip Kerr. I'm a lifelong avid reader...don't know how many thousands I've read. Lately however I've developed a serious intolerance for books that can't hold my interest. A new failing on my part, I'm sure. I'm a quarter of the way through Kerr's book and I have yet to throw...

    Your TOP Cagney movie . . .?

My favourite Cagney film is probably 'The Public Enemy' from 1931. "I ain't so tough"...great line. Always like to watch him in 'Mr. Roberts' as well. And although I'm not a big musical fan, nor a fan of propaganda films, I have to admit I love watching him dance in 'Yankee Doodle Dandy'. He...

What Are Your Favorite Books To Reread? / How Many Times? / Why?

Coincidences like that are always interesting. I have a coincidence with one of the books on my list as well. Last year I was describing Walteri’s book, The Egyptian, to my wife. I was explaining that it was interesting that a book originally written in Finnish became the bestselling book in...

What Are Your Favorite Books To Reread? / How Many Times? / Why?

I am a lifelong avid reader and I have a slew of books that I regularly re-read. Most are fiction. I read a lot of non-fiction in the course of doing research on the First World War and the Anglo-Boer War but I consider that research, not 'reading'. I think the only non-fiction I regularly...
