I generally need a wide brim/high crown to fit my features but believe it or not this Borsalino looked like a stingy brim on me 18 months ago, and was too tight despite putting it on a stretcher.
After getting my VS custom last summer I pretty much stopped wearing my vintage hats but after dropping 75 pounds I learned that the term "fat head" is based on a physical reality...my VS is now almost two sizes too big and I hope Art can work some magic and shrink it down a bit. I know I can...
If you can afford $300, I would go straight to Art Fawcett and have him make you a hat exactly to your specs. Sure, you can pick up any number of top brand vintage hats from ebay but odds are that none of them will satisfy you completely. I'm sitting on five vintage hats that i purchased on...
Aftershave smells good and has a pleasant bracing feel when splashed on, but in the end they are mostly alcohol and will dry out your skin after you just did such a great job of moisturizing it with the shave soap.
I prefer a shave balm which has the same scents but also nutrients for your skin.
Don't skimp on the strop, even for a beginner, because they are a long term investment. Go for a good quality "Latigo" leather that is 3" wide and preferably with a separate canvas strop(althought attached is acceptable). Beware ebay specials! Try ClassicShaving.com
As for shave soap...you...
I have an early '60's vintage Meisterstuck 149 that I inherited from my grandfather and a Cross Townsend Lapis Lazul that I purchased 20 years ago. Both are considered expensive pens today and both are attention getter's so I suppose that the neophytes would consider them ostentatious when I...
I'm going to be in Aventura just north of Miami on this Saturday 8/28 thru Monday. Could use some recommendations for the following to visit:
Good Hat shop(Panamas or felt)
Good barber for a hot towel straight shave
Good shoe shine stand
Good vintage clothing shop
Thanks!

Better than nothing...
I took my family and our best friends kids to the "Meat Packing District" in lower Manhattan for lunch. We must have passed street venders selling stingy brim Fedora's on every block. I ended up buying as a gift a hat for each of my friends kids(my daughter of...
Welcome & WARNING!
Welcome to the forum sandmountains, prepare yourself to become a sartorial grownup and start practicing your responses for when people randomly compliment you for your lid.
But a warning...do not under any circumstance visit the "Art Fawcett Hall of Fame" thread...those...
Project "Resurrection" Part II
Just got my Montecristi back from Art who re-blocked it, and installed new bands. This time around i switched to a cloth sweat band because the leather, although beautiful to look at, sweat the devil out of me this summer. I also had Art switch from the...
World War I USMC issue straight razor by Clauss
George Wostenholm & Son Sheffield
Just got both my razors back from Lynn Abrams of the straightrazorplace forum and all I can say is WOW what a honing job. I had the greatest shave of my life this morning with my Clauss USMC which is...
The soak did in fact clean it up a lot. The straw was starting to show some dirt and patina on the brim and had developed a slight browning on the top of the C-crown, the soak cleaned the brim up completely(sans the ink stain) and it lightened significantly the brown patina on the crown. I'm...
Keep'em coming Red, the BW shot's are spot on. I don't have a full sized mirror at work nor a tripod for my camera so it's been difficult to post pics of my own.
I'm already drooling! That kind of WPI from PB combined with Art's finishing touch is going to return to you one of the nicest Panamas to grace this forum. Can't wait to see pics! Ripper!
Thanks Kkaderly! Go for it...it's a gorgeous color combo for a Montecristi. Make sure you tell Art to use a dark matt Burgundy like in my original photo because a year later I sent him the hat back to repair the band and he ended up replacing it with a shade lighter color that had a slight...
