With the greatest respect, I am dismayed by your assertation. A brief of study of nearly any major aspect of world history reveals that folks were as vicious, decadent, bloodthirsty, duplicitous, sex-obsessed, power-mad, and just plain awful back then as they are now. Man and women have been...
If you don't do it, someone else will.
If I want something bad enough, I'll always make an offer. I used to despise this manner of underhanded dealing but finally gave in after the hard lesson of several dozen auctions for long-sought items mysteriously ended. Works about ten or fifteen...
I know it sounds crazy.
You'd have to hold the garments in your hands to see the diference. I dig Toyo products very much, and have a bunch of Sugar Cane and Rickson's stuff that I wear often, but they are mass-produced by a HUGE corporation and sometimes skimp on the quality of materials or...
My 96 year old grandfather has been using the phrase "old school" (as in "he's from the old school" or "I'm from the old school") for as long as I can remember. The phrase existed at least as early as the Nineteenth century.
That the suit appears more similar to a 1930's catalog illustration than to an actual 1930's suit is very attractive to me. The Japanese are generally a very romantic people and in the midst of zeal often over-exaggerate/over-exploit/over-stylize favorite details while reproducing things of the...
I have an Aero Bootlegger built with vintage black FQHH and it is dynamite stuff, no problems. More of a matte finish and slightly lighter-weight than standard FQHH, but still quite heavy I like it, but again this is just my opinion.
Front quarter horse may not be the best leather to wear while driving a car, but you couldn't make a better choice for motorcycle riding. This is just my opinion, of course.
I'll take the books however I can find 'em, original or reprints, but a lot of the really good ones haven't been reprinted in decades (so sometimes the bullet gets bit).
I agree that Hemingway's work doesn't read much like Lardner's at all, but apparently Lardner was what got Hemingway...
Hammett wouldn't have existed if it wasn't for Hemingway, who wouldn't have existed if it wasn't for Lardner, who wouldn't have existed if it wasn't for Twain, and so on, and so on...
And actually I was thinking at that moment of the great MISS LONLEYHEARTS, but I consider DAY OF THE LOCUST a...
THE book.
Check out Nat Fleischer's A PICTORAL HISTPRY OF BOXING. It is usually in print and can be easilty obtained on Amazon or eBay. An invaluable reference source for any boxing fan, and loaded with AMAZING early photos.
My father bought me my first copy of this book when I was a kid and...
I've never been able to stomach Chandler. Prose way too floral and nineteenth century for me. Hammet was lean and to the point.
Jim Thompson wrote circles around both of 'em. Horace McCoy as well. Nathanael West blew 'em all to smithereens.
99% of Ralph Lauren's stuff is expensive pure steaming crap. The RRL line is for the most part an exception. Many RRL garments are of exceptional quality and feature top-notch materials and precise details. Some of the recent chin-strap 20's and 30's style workshirts BLOW AWAY the Sugar Cane and...
