Goatskin is actually a tougher and more long-lasting hide than horse, I believe. According to Nelson and Parsons' 'Hell bent for leather' (not the most accurate of jacket books, but I think I believe them on this), horse rates fifth on the durability scale, goat rates second. Only kangaroo skin...
Looks mighty fine, Paddy-might have to get me one of those. I have an Aero poplin B-10, one of their early test samples picked up cheap, but the alpaca is nowhere near thick enough-it's more like tweed. ELC's new one is nice, but I'm not keen on the pointy collar.

You just hold on there, boy..
Will have to wait a day or two, the A-2 is at a local place having a nametag sewn on-couldn't bear to leave it unadorned any longer! I'll get right on to it when it comes back.

For the money, I'd say probably Flight Suits/Gibson and Barnes, from what I hear-their historical A-2 and G-1 are excellent and barring the odd detail (e.g.YKK zip) are the best you'll get if you're not into spending big bucks. Or Aero, whose lower priced A-2s, especially if you can catch one of...
Nice one, Paddy!
Just ordered it-couldn't refuse at that price. Was hoping they'd do 'Silver Wings, Pinks and Greens' at that price as well, but no such luck! Thanks for the heads up there, Paddy me boyo!

A tenner??!!
Strewth, I paid about £50 for mine if I recall! That's cheap. Great book, wish sometimes they would show labels or give the manufacturer's name-can get a bit frustrating (for those who are interested in such things). Hang on-jacket ART? I haven't got that one! I'm off to Amazon...
Ruffian? Moi?
This coming from a bloke who looks like one of the cast of 'Hell Drivers' with his Irvin on! (And no, I don't mean Patrick McGoohan-or Stanley Baker, for that matter) :)
Actually there's a very similar coat indeed on P.13 of Maguire's 'American Flight jackets' -only difference seems to be the collar is real fur and not sheepskin. I have a feeling canvas was more popular than one might think. Don't like that 'ooge great collar, probably very nice in a Spad but...
You're right 'Lovely Boy', I think he was. Fine pair of shoulders, show 'em off, show 'em off......wish I could find decent stuff in charity shops, of which there are hundreds round here, but very little in the way of good stuff in 'em-my best find was a genuine Crombie overcoat, mint, for £25...
Ho! Bored again are we, Ashworth old fellow? Now come along, you don't need any encouragement from me to go off on one! You have me all wrong you know-back in the old days before I knew any better, I admit I thought ELC were the be-all and end-all, especially when they're just up the road, but...
I certainly notice a hell of a lot of people with nice things to say about RMNZ's jackets lately-perhaps I'll have to check them out next time I'm in the market for a new jacket. Wish they'd do something with their website though. Not sure I'd buy another Eastman A-2, they get the little details...
Paddy, you jammy sod, how do you manage to talk your way into these places? Must be the old Irish charm! Nip round to the Smithsonian, I bet they'd let you sit in 'Enola Gay'! :) BTW, did you get my Email with the address? I couldn't PM you (too many messages in your PM inbox!), and I have two...
Hi Bob, thanks for sharing that story with us. I've read a few books on the subject, and actually been lucky enough to speak to some old sailors who were on the Russian convoys, and what those guys went through must have been absolutely horrendous, especially for the merchant seaman. Imagine...
