Hell of a jacket Paddy,
All you need is an Avro 504 or a Curtiss Jenny and you'll be set!
(But perhaps not the riding breeches and putties, eh? Well, whatever floats your boat, I guess :-)
You are quite right of course
It's also easy to forget that these programmes are aimed at the general public, not the likes of us who know all there is to know about WWII (or like to think we do :-)). If it stimulates interest, great.
Well, what did you think?
I always have a bit of a problem with programmes like this, because they're never going to find out what it was really like to fly in a WWII bomber-they're never going to get shot at! Nevertheless I enjoyed it-anything on terrestrial television about WWII aviation is...
You could try What Price Glory http://whatpriceglory.com
They do a B-3 which is a bit more accurate than your average 'mall jacket' but doesn't cost the Earth. It isn't quite up to the top-end repros, but it doesn't look too bad-not seen one in the flesh mind you. Also keep an eye on Aero's sale...
Paddy, great minds think alike!
I was just about to start a similar thread myself. Fine selection Old chap. A few of my favourites are:-
Lancaster Target-Jack Currie
One of the best and funniest accounts of the Bomber war over Germany. Jack Currie was a Sergeant pilot with 12 Squadron RAF...
Hi Paddy, yep, saw the ad for that-I shall be watching, looks good. Paddy, please go and join in the 'If you can pick one girl' thread in 'The Golden Era' and post your pic of Carole Landis in the A-2-I've been dying to but didn't think I'd better half-inch your pic out of the VLJ files! How are...
Thanks for the kind words, chaps,
I'll post some pics of me in it when it's allowed out of the box again! BTW, before anyone gets the impression that I get flight jackets bought for me for Christmas on a regular basis, I'd better point out that although my wife is contributing, this is mainly...
Thanks Chaps,
This is Aero's smooth horsehide, which hasn't been drummed like their 'jerky' horse, so it hasn't been softened to bring up the grain. They do say that it takes longer to wear in. It is fairly stiff, but not excessively or uncomfortably so, and I'm looking forward to giving it...
Just got my hands on a new Russet horse 42-15142-P A-2 with spun silk lining from Aero. It was on the sale page, where I've nabbed several bargains. This one was reduced to £240 because of a couple of marks where some paint had to be removed from one of the cuffs-you have to look pretty hard to...
That looks like a beauty-RMNZ make a great jacket, and they are a lot of money these days, especially for you boys in the US. Looks like you got a bargain-Congrats, enjoy!
Mike,
There's no hard and fast rule for flight jackets around that time-most of them were privately purchased-length, material and accoutrements like fur collars were all down to the wearer and what he could obtain and afford. Leather was popular of course, but so was canvas. I'd guess though...
Hi Jake,
Can't say I collect pilot autographs, but I was pleasantly surprised a few months ago when I brought home a second-hand book I'd just bought (The Quest for Mach 1-a damn good book which I was pleased enough to find as it was), opened it up to the title page and found a compliments slip...
Worth looking at Aero too-they are currently doing an A-1 in Cape sheep leather, as per originals. Nobody else is doing that at present as far as I know. They're still doing free shipping to the US for orders over £200 too.
More nautical than aviation, but notable for probably the only cinematic appearance of a Grumman Duck, is 'Murphy's War'.
Must be more, must be more...'Flying Tigers', of course. And there's a B-25 in 'Forever Young' (Mel Gibson chick flick). Oh yes of course-'The Dambusters', and 'The Right...
Hi Swede,
It's true, the thing that films like Saving Private Ryan don't prepare you for is the sheer size of the Normandy beaches-they literally go on for miles. It's easy to see why the US troops had such a terrible time on Omaha, with the way the land rises at the top of the beach. the...
Hi Mike
It's funny, as you say, how guys from two different countries can develop obsessions about each other's air forces in WWII. I've racked my brains on numerous occasions, trying to figure out why I have such an interest in the USAAF, and I'm blowed if I can put my finger on it-I have no...
OK fellers, now I have a question..
When does a shoe become a boot? To me, all the things that the guys in the pictures have on their feet are boots, ie. they cover the ankle. To me, and I'm probably wrong here, shoes don't cover the ankle. How come to the US military, a boot is a shoe? This...
Hi Uwe,
I have to say I never thought the SPR Tiger looked that bad, just a bit too narrow, with the turret a little too far forward-only sad gits like us know the difference! :-) It's not as bad as the ones in Kelly's Heroes! It is a pity they couldn't get hold of some more authentic armour...
