Originally the hat was just a typical thin ribbon fedora with the very narrow edge binding. So the one it has now is much wider than the original and I can tell you there are no puckers on the edge binding and the stitching is even all the way around, so I guess Mike has it figured out. Thanks...
I thought I should repost this in a dedicated thread on Northwest hats for future reference. In case anyone didn't see it in the borsalino thread, this is a vintage borsy with a new ribbon, edge binding and sweatband done by Northwest hats. It never fit before and was resized down.
One new...
What makes me sad, is that many of the vintage off the shelf fedora's were done really well. The quality of materials and workmanship as a whole (yes there were cheap ones then too) was at a much higher level than it is today. As an example, I have about 7 or 8 vintage Borsalino's which are all...
In the end, it's your money of course and a person is certainly entitled to spend it where they are inclined and see fit. But one of the purposes of forums like these is to give people an informed choice. If one wants to pay in the upper $200s for a new Borsalino or Stetson or other brand...
I agree and the vast majority of my 50 some fedora's are vintage, but the main message of my thread wasn't really for Vintage verses New or Custom, but rather New off the shelf versus Custom.

I know that this has been discussed before but with so many new members perhaps it would be worth talking about again. Since most people who are new to the hat world don't really know what a quality fedora is and what difference there is between the Vintage, New off the shelf and custom...
My 4 year old grand daughter is sitting on my lap as I'm looking at this hat and she says. "Wow, that's an awesome hat" Out of the mouth of babes, I have to agree. Art's work never fails to amaze me despite all the hats I've seen over the years.

A Vintage Borsalino I got a long time ago. It never fit and needed a new sweatband so it never got worn. So I had it resized to fit and a new sweatband put in at Northwest hats. I have way too many thin ribbon Borsalino's that all look alike so I had Mike change out the ribbon and edge binding...
When I first saw some of these felt-straw marriages my first impression was, "Hmmm, I'm not sure I like it". But they've kinda grown on me and with the right straw and felt combinations they look really good.

Pandora Deluxe
Here's another Pandora I had made up recently by Mike Miller from Northwest Hats in Eugene Oregon. It has a vintage cuenca crown with Pecan brown rabbit felt brim with triple stitching that matches the ribbon color. The ribbon is a little hard to photograph, its a copper tone...
Besdor, did they ever say "How" they would do it?? If so, could you or anyone else who knows, could you post that information. I know someone who is willing to give it a try.

Thanks scooter, I do believe yours was the inspiration for the edge binding. I had never seen it before until Mike showed me the one he did for you. I was just going to have him do a wider ribbon and a little wider edge binding but this one inspired me to do something different.

Thanks again Tony. Here's a vintage hat a friend of mine took to Mike. It had a plain black ribbon on it that needed replaced. My friend wanted something a little different. So he had Mike make this ribbon treatment for him by sewing 3 different ribbons together. It turned out really well, a...
Mike is the next generation of hatters that will carry on the torch of excellence that some of the other older hatters have now but one day will have to pass on . He is only in his early 30s and has real pride in his work and has that "knack" for making hats.
I saw a compliment here by Tonyb...
Does a Nutria have Stripes?
Well this one does now. I had a thin ribbon Nutria Stetson that looked too western for me and had Mike at NorthWest hats turn it into a fedora with the striped edge binding and a matching stripe on the bow. Here's how it looks now. He had to put a fairly deep...
