Great ideas. Thanks, Snookie! I think I'm going to make it in a rusty red wool crepe, for an autumn leaf kind of theme. Or a Japanese squirrel print for total goofiness.
And yes, I think acorns might very well be the ancestor of the rockabilly cherry! lol
On the subject of working with...
I you go watch "Rome, Open City" by Rossellini (1945) it has lots of totally un-glamorous shots of how Italian women did their hair during wartime.
It's also a very good movie :)
I got some samples from the silkenpearl lady a while back. I loved the pearl primer powder and I actually wanted to get a full size but somehow forgot about it. It gave a very nice matte sheen without the talc-y look of regular powder. The sample was jasmine scented but I'd probably go for the...
Cute patterns everyone! I'm always on the lookout for puff sleeves too.
Here's a new pattern I got. It comes with instructions for the crocheted acorns at the front!
Crocheted acorns, how could I resist that? lol (I don't crochet but luckily I know a girl who does.)
Yesterday I tried with vaseline on one eye and almond oil on the other, and I have to say that the almond oil gave a much more authentic 30's glossy eyelid! It actually looked pretty good. It didn't make my eyeliner dissolve either, as long as I only used a tiny dab on the browbone. You could...
Laura Chase, that hairstyle is the cutest ever! How long is your hair when uncurled?
I'm thinking it's the slightly oval shape that makes it look 1920's?
It even looks a bit like those pictures of women in the 1910s who wore their hair short and curly.
There's a new and fairly extensive guide to fingerwaving on the Miss Vintage site: http://www.miss-vintage.com/archive/1930s/ (scroll down).
I'm wondering if I could get away with that "Push-Up Wave" technique ...
I've had problems with the hole inforcers sticking properly, too. I think the way to go about it is to use a base coat first to fill out the ridges.
I just feel silly about buying yet another "absolutely necessary" product! :eusa_doh: Would it be sacrilege to use a top coat varnish as a base coat?
I've had very good resulats with heavy duty protein treatments like Aphogee or Nexxus Emergencee. It's like Joico K-pak times ten. That and the conditioner-as -shampoo routine that has already been suggested.
Let's talk about Shrinky Dinks! You know, the plastic things shrink in the oven. I made them a lot when I was a kid.
I'm thinking of maybe making some silly 40's-like dangly novelty pins from it, what do you think?
This sounds like a welcome alternative for those who are getting fed up with Christmas turning into a cult of consumption:
http://www.buyhandmade.org/
I plan on making all of my Christmas gifts myself this year, but it might be a bit too much to ask of the rest of my family!
Do...
Miss 1929, I'm using a vitamin C serum from Cellular Skin Rx, I think it's about 35$.
I haven't tried any other brands so I can't compare, but I'm quite pleased with this one.
LD and Snookie, thanks for your help! :)
I see what you mean about the things that have to be taken into consideration. I'll try with a simple pattern without a centre front and centre back seam to see if it works by just adding a bit to the side seams. Or maybe it would be better to slit up...
Here's a grading-related question.
I don't have the skills to grade patterns yet.
Would be possible to buy vintage patterns one size smaller and just use the excess seam allowance without actually changing the pattern?
I always end of trimming off a lot from size 16 patterns (especially...
