Here are a few pics of my Cooper A2 (Orange label), not sure of the year of manufacture but because of it's spec and use of hardware etc. I think it's probably from the late 80's.
It's patched up as 334th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, 8th Airforce.
Thanks Charles, not sure what year my G1 was manufactured but I picked it up second hand in 2006, new condition for the grand some of £55.00 so this has always been my best ever deal when picking up used jackets.
Thanks Charles, it is a really nice jacket and the time worn effect is wonderfully subtle and gives a great authentic used look to the hide.
I've have quite a few ELC A2s over the years, some have been sold on but the Pearl Harbor has always stayed with me and even though it is a Eastman house...
I was looking through some photos of my WW2 jackets and came across a few of my Eastman Pearl Harbor A2 in walnut steerhide so I thought I would post them.
The ELC PH A2 is one of my most comfortable jackets with excellent steerhide which drapes well and didn't take long to break in at all...
thanks Charles, it certainly was a great A2 but like us all it got sold on to fund other jacket purchases. I still have my ELC RW 27752, 55J14 G1 and Irvin 1942 pattern in my stable which are regular wearers.
I have always like the Star contract and I do think that Eastman's current version is probably the best they have produced.
Here are a few photos of my Eastman Star from around 2006 and as you can see, their current model is superior in every way.
As we all know that Eastman collars, especially on their Rough Wear contract A2s, can look at bit odd but with HWT and a little bit of work they can be manipulated into a more appealing shape.
Here is my 2011 RW 27752 after the HWT treatment.....
There are many great points in this thread but "buy the best you can afford" and "what looks and feels good on your body shape" are probably the most true.
I have GW, ELC, BK jackets in my stable plus a Cooper and a couple of originals but my recent purchase was an issue PHAAR brand name...
Eastman modelled their 55J14 G1 from and original LW Foster Sportswear 55J14 so maybe LW Foster just got the perfect pattern shape throughout their contracts for the Navy.
I think Roger Moore mentions on his site that the LW Foster G1s have a great fit with good size shoulders and a trimmer...
I hear what you are saying Deac, however all my other G1s are a size 46" reg and they fit great in both the body and sleeves albeit they are repros - ELC G1, BK M422a which are both I'm guessing classed as a Mil-Spec fit.
Where as my original 1950's LW Foster Sportswear G1 is a 46" reg and it...
I recently purchased a PHAAR brand DSCP issue G1 to which I was advised by the seller to go up a size to a 48" reg (I usually wear a 46" reg) to which I did and found the fit of the jacket perfect on the shoulder and body, however the problem is that by doing this you end up with the extra inch...
Out of all my flight jackets, both A2 & G1, the only jacket I have patched was my very first A2 which was a 1980's Cooper with a name tag, Squadron patch of the 334th FS, 4th FG and the 8th AF shoulder patch.
The reason for the choice of patch as you can see from my avatar was that the 334th...
Here are the after photos.....
Minus the San Diego Leathers label, stitch marks from Contract and DSCP previously removed labels
Chunky YKK zipper slider removed and replaced with the Paper Clip style slider/puller
well that's my alterations complete on the jacket, San Diego Leathers label removed (you can see the stitch marks from where the contract and DSCP labels were previously) and the chunky YKK zipper slider removed and replaced with the Paper Clip style slider/puller successfully, not a bad job...
The cowhide is pretty soft and subtle (probably due to the rubbery coating, I heard somewhere that the leather is treated with a flame retardant which gives it this type of feel - not sure if that is true or not) which gives an ease of movement.
The body of the jacket seems to be a perfect fit...
From what's been said, it sounds like the USW USCG G1 (Jesus, how many acronyms :)) is a winner and much nicer than the PHAAR to which San Diego Leathers mentioned that they had altered (not sure by themselves) some of the G1s to have hand warmer pockets as an additional option.
However I must...
Here's an excerpt from the Cockpit USA website regarding their Mil-Spec G1..........
A timeless classic, the U.S. Navy Issue Mil Spec G-1 is crafted from 100% goatskin and manufactured to military specified patterns and is currently supplied by Cockpit to U.S. Navy and Coast Guard and special...
