Yup, my 60's Cal is the loudest jacket I own. To that point, don't expect breaking the jacket in to remove the noise. As others have put it, this comes with a hardy jacket meant for providing protection on a motorcycle.
I agree, I think that's a bit of a design flaw. I've put an elastic band in one of my vintage jackets and it really improved the function of the bi-swing back. Might have to give this jacket the same treatment at some point.
It is indeed a size 40. I have definitely seen it on other Californians as well. I had heard someone mention that they thought the elastic might be worn by out in theirs which made me curious if there was an elastic band in the jacket in the first place.
Checking the ELMC website, you can see...
Here's a pic of what I'm talking about. You can see that the bi-swing is in the expanded position, despite the jacket not being taut against my back.
General fit pic:
I recently acquired a used ELMC Californian. Even though, I believe the back fits me quite well, the bi-swing back seems to naturally protrude and rest in the expanded position. Feeling through the lining, I can't feel an elastic band. Since I didn't buy the jacket new, and the previous owner...
The sleeves will definitely get shorter via tunneling as you break it in.
The fit still feels a bit off to me, although I can comfortably layer in mine which I'm hoping will get me to wear it more as winter gets here. I prefer a more vintage length, wheras this has a more modern, longer body -...
Looks like a 60s Cal CHP crosszip. Seems like it's in pretty good condition. Not much for measurements besides the length from collar to sleeve, which is a weird choice...
The measurements along the bottom hem of the jacket. I usually just measure it with the jacket zipped closed and laid flat, just like the chest measurement. Since it is a fairly slim jacket, it's helpful to know how the bottom will fit around the waist.
I want to try this repair on one of my jackets. Do you have any information on the piece of elastic you used? Also what gauge of thread do you use for these repairs. I assume you're using a waxed thread?
To confound things, the Lacoste name/logo was licensed to Izod to market in the USA from to 60s to the 90s. So these will have their own labels. Here is my Lacoste I've had for ages, probably late 80s or early 90s.
That's a really cool one. Interesting that they seem to have the original zipper separate from the jacket. Can anyone tell me the purpose of those strings that appear to be holding the lining to the jacket? Never seen that before.
I feel like they were meant to be short and be worn with high waisted pants. Torso would end around the belt line to facilitate wear while riding a motorcycle. The CHP jackets were also short so that they wouldn't get in the way of the officer's gun belt.
I tried to find the pants I was thinking of and they had a more complex double knee that came up much higher, so I don't think they are the IH ones. Honestly might be just Dickies or Carhartts although there are certainly plenty of Japanese companies that make workwear that tmitche could be too...
