You must live in a very northerly climes, but I appreciate the need to break the monotony - I've got a vintage Roebuck denim jacket on the way for nicer days. Or is that day.
Indeed I do, Sloan. I now have two C3’s – one medium-sized ELC type to go under the B3 on occasion – and another large...
"Aero Quartermaster A-2 at £385 or rather nice nylon windbreaker at £450, hmm. Which to choose. Which. To. Choose..."
I just find that something like an L2 breaks the monotony of always wearing leather.
In the lengthy sub-zero winter months I'm always wearing my B3 or Irvin with C3 vests...
For the summer months, I can highly recommend an L2 - I had a Buzz Rickson's L2 and it's a great design. There are also originals to be had on-line (mostly later L2-Bs though). Of course, finding one that isn't worn out is the trick, but they are out there ... and replacement cuffs are out there...
Good points Plumbline.
And the other thing to consider is the age demographic of the original users .v. the demographic of the FL.
The original wearers of A2s, Irvins and the motorcycle jackets for the Luftwaffe pilots and post-war Beatniks were just young lads of 18-25 as a general rule of...
Good day F68,
I have an ELC Luftwaffe in a size 42 made in horse hide – and have a medium build with a 39” chest - and I only have an Aero ANJ-3 in a size 44 to compare it against (which fits me perfectly).
The Luftwaffe is a superbly made jacket in every regard IMHO – and the fit on me is...
Hi John,
Wow ! THANK YOU ! Now that’s an inspired and brilliant tip if ever I saw one …! :)
I’ve googled “Kiwi Clear Wax Shine” and I see a few products by Kiwi - some are a liquid and others a paste in a tin like the shoe polishes.
Is this the one you’d recommend ...
Well that’s all good to know ! Thanks John.
I bought mine about a month after ELC had switched over to this matt finish. I asked Gary if I could have the other, recently made glossy finish (like the 1940 type I had) and he said no. Fair enough – so I thought that I’d go for it anyway (as I...
Quite right, John, there is no Warhorse on the RAF jackets. But I was specifically speaking of both types of the “aged” leather on offer at ELC and saying that I simply wasn’t a fan of either – the Warhorse AND this type; the ELC RAF jackets used to have a smooth, glossy finish – which, ideally...
Hi Andrew
Jon’s original inquiry was solely regarding the colour of the fleece and he asked if it was accurate – and my answer was only to that point.
However, you’ve taught me something new and I’ve just looked up Aces High - and I agree, they do look to have the edge on ELC to me. So thank...
Hi Jon,
I have an ELC RAF 1942 “Irvin” and I can assure you that it is 100% accurate – as, back around 1988, I was lucky enough to handle my old doctor’s Irvin from his days in the war; he flew Swordfish in the Fleet Air Arm and he said it had been "in the drink a few times" ! I remember seeing...
I think it's finally time, after lurking trepidatiously in the shadows for a good while, to come out from behind the curtain so to speak. Hello everyone.
Like many here, I have followed this thread with surprised interest, and some sadness and, if I may, I would like to add my opinion to the...
