I like it- what kind of machine do you use? I went through a bunch of home sewing machines I found a 70+ year old industrial that will actually sew leather. Still having trouble with it though- I'm kind of pushing it's abilities (and mine).

I know there are others on the list doing the same or similar things that I am- let's see pics and start a discussion.
Here's my latest, jacket number 3.

I think I'm about average- 6' 198 lbs, 16.5x35/36 shirt size.
My next one is going to be smaller though, probably about a 40, just to see how difficult it is to fabricate other sizes.

Jacket #3 Done!
The russet cowhide was just a lucky find- I had no idea it was going to look so much like horse after it was assembled.
Here's jacket number 3. I made it a little roomier than #2 and used a darker hide. I also used tan thread for the contrast, but am having some topstiching...
I do not have the A-2 experience that many of you have, but I have had the opportunity to examine genuine A-2's (Doniger, Aero) and compare them to Eastman, (modern) Aero, and (current and pre-production) Goodwear on the same table at the same time. I am also in the process of making my own...
It's all about the time- we have a baby coming Tuesday and this jacket thing takes a tremendous amount of it (time I mean, not baby). It's been almost a year since I set out to teach myself to make jackets, and my grand production total is two. I cut up that first one I made to salvage the...
Man, I would love to, but I'm in the same boat you are... We have a baby due on Tuesday and I think I would be drawn and quartered if I spent any more out-of-pocket on hides. It has to be a self feeding hobby. Kind of like an ouroboros.lol

Thanks all- check out the pics in the classifieds I took last night- the grain on this leather is incredible, I had NO idea it was going to pop like that. Too bad it's a one-off hide, I would have liked to find more of it. I'm about halfway through the next jacket, should have it done in a few...
So I can continue my jacket making hobby I though I would put this jacket up for sale and see if anyone is interested. Ive been wearing it for a few weeks and have replaced the zipper- the vintage Talon I had first put in did not hold up. Knits and Zipper are from G&B, cowhide with cotton liner...
I agree- the WWII officer's and enlisted trousers are my favorite cut, just seem to have trouble with neutral colors for some reason. Probably because I don't wear dressy clothes at work, I'm stuck in a modern two piece mechanics uniform.

It's a difficult look to carry off well- I usually don't try (except for flight jackets) because I almost invariably end up in full uniform- pinks, shirt, etc. I like things that match, like Grranimals. It's also difficult to find civi items that go well with the standard US Army officer's...
Edward- keep an eye out for those '80's Avirex boots like the pair I have, they would work great for wearables and have modern vibram soles. The top is narrow enough to fit under a pair of trousers- real trousers, not the skintight girl's jeans that seem to be so popular with the younger crowd...
