It's based on this jacket taken from the Spanish Civil War thread over on the VLJ. Thanks to Zoomer for starting the thread and finding these pictures.

Sgt. Joseph Taylor, "Lincoln-Washington activist, especially distinguished." April 1938
Size 42 Lincoln Brigade type leather jacket. I used an o.d. cotton for the lining and a matching zipper with olive tape. Glazed cotton thread. M-422A style pockets. Double top stitching and top stitching on the cuffs. Wool knits. Nice reddish-brown cowhide that creases like crazy when you get it...
This is my first attempt at small sizes. I made the size 42 pattern based on my 46- took a while. I used an o.d. cotton for the lining and a matching zipper with olive tape. M-422A style pockets. Double top stitching and top stitching on the cuffs. Wool knits and some cool buttons that Dubow A2...
That's the same- as long as the label says vintage or replica you are good (the replica line is the better of the two) but it is going to be SMALL- I originally had a medium and it was more like a size 40, I'll bet the small is a 36-38.

Since I have one of each I thought I'd do a quick write up. They are both size large and both have the same outershell, hardware , and cuffs (standard Alpha stuff, pretty good quality) I'm going to focus on the jackets themselves. I have never examined the genuine article so this is all from the...
Hey hawk- great find! I've been looking for a large size like that to base a pattern on. There is not much you can do about the gash except back it up on the inside with another piece of leather. I'd pecard the jacket and let it go.
Another thought- I can back it up for you in exchange for...
You MIGHT say he's like an evil twin, only not so much with the evil part :)
As looks and functionality go I like the zipper closure on this jacket better than the buttons. But the zipper also eliminates the collar overlap you get with an A-1 which I also like. Tradeoffs[huh]
I'm going...
Thanks everybody.
It's a little more kelly green than it looks in the pics, but fairly close. This is my first 48 and it worked ok, but ended up being narrow in the shoulders and stout in the tum, which is period accurate for some A-2's, but I think I want the shoulders a little bigger next...
I needed to make a jacket to get used to my new machine (different presser foot, feed, speed, and feel-had to learn top stitching again) I used a hide and buttons Jeff contributed to the cause (Dubow A-2) and made a size 48 mostly based on the Spanish Civil War A1/A2 hybrids. I used tanker...
Russet Florsheim ankle boots wrap around strap style- I picked these up because they are very similar to WWII private purchase officer's boots. leather soles, good condition labled 9.5 D but I can get my E size foot in with no problem (What Price Glory sells a repop version for $165)...
Look how big the collar is on the first jacket- I ran smack into this with the second jacket I made, copied a period collar exactly. With a fedora and trousers it looks great- with just jeans my wife thought the collar looked somewhat disco-esque... yet ANOTHER reason to hate the '70's...
At some point I would like to design my own stuff, but my skill level is not there yet. Mostly it would be '40's era jackets anyway- belted backs, scalloped yokes, etc. pretty conservative stuff.
Can anyone point me to some good suppliers for alpaca, blanket wool, etc for linings? Sourcing...
Now that I have the 44 figured out my next two test jackets (leather) are going to be a 46 and 42, which will keep me on my 2 jackets a month schedule. The biggest problem I have is sourcing material. I've been looking for a good alpaca and cotton sateen for a long time but have not been able to...
Two officer's tunics, all in good condition. One has a bullion AAF patch in fair condition. $50 obo for both plus shipping.

As usual I'm putting my jackets up for sale so can make more. This is my A-1 test jacket in 100% cotton twill. The lining is Kona cotton with twill arms. It has all the features of the classic A-1; wool knits and cuffs, 7 button front with nipple snaps on the bottom tabs, button front pockets...
