    The Maltese Falcon

The studio prop department probably had one in stock. Or borrowed one from a friendly gun shop, If not they could have faked one up. Didn't Warners make war pictures or foreign legion type pictures that could have used English weapons?

Vintage Car Thread - Discussion and Parts Requests

More expensive cars had an auxiliary vacuum pump, usually on the fuel pump. These double decker fuel pumps are available for any vintage car with vacuum wipers. Buick and Packard V8s had a vacuum pump built into the oil pump. There are 12v electric vacuum pumps available.

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

The Big Con is the classic study of con men in the golden era. It began as an academic study of underworld slang then the researcher got caught up in the con man's world. This is one of the original sources you can go to, to find out what life was really like in those days. The Sting was based...

    The ultimate bad-guys of cinema-history?

Three pages of replies and no one has mentioned Peter Lorre in M or Der Verlorene . Whatever part he plays he has that sinister quality. Even when he isn't doing anything in particular you don't want to turn your back on him. Must be near the top of the list of bad guys of crime.

    Your Most Disturbing Realizations

An odd thing I noticed when reading the biographies of these health nuts was that most of them suffered from some deadly disease in their youth which they cured by natural health means. So they went from dying in their twenties, to living well into their eighties and nineties when large numbers...

    Experimenting on foods.

For some reason I can't explain I have spent hours and hours watching this series of Youtube videos on cooking in the 18th century. They are strangely habit forming. The presenter is a historical reinactor from the northern US but this particular recipe is for 18th century French toast.

    Your Most Disturbing Realizations

I was brought up to believe in orthodox medicine and laugh at health nuts, still and all they seemed to make sense. To decide the question I looked into some well known health nuts of the past and found out how they ended up. In other words did their kooky theories help them live longer better...

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

Bought a box of Cream of Wheat yesterday and was shocked and horrified at what I found. When I opened the box this morning it contained a dirty looking whole wheat substance not the pure white Cream of Wheat I expected. It even tastes different. God Dammit if I wanted Red River Cereal I would...

    Experimenting on foods.

I love home made soup and make it all the time. A crock pot (or pressure cooker if you are in a hurry) makes things easier.
