    1940s/1950s cars vs. 1960s cars

Several car companies fought the trend of the times and they all went broke except one. The only company to build small, economical, practical, reliable cars and get away with it was American Motors. Do you remember the Rambler? All the independents made small economy cars, and they all went...

    1940s/1950s cars vs. 1960s cars

From contemporary reports the mid fifties did see a drop in quality. The basic car, the engine, transmission, power train, steering, brakes and wheels were fine, in fact longer lived and more reliable than ever. The problem was the chintzy accessories. Air conditioners, power windows, power...

    1940s/1950s cars vs. 1960s cars

Lizzie as a Dodge owner you should appreciate this. In the early fifties Plymouth and Dodge made some high quality, reliable, well built, well engineered, roomy, economical, long lived vehicles. They were actually smaller and lighter, yet roomier than the models they replaced. In other words...

    1940s/1950s cars vs. 1960s cars

While we are at it, let's not forget the role of organized labor in building overpriced poor quality cars. There were plenty of examples of lousy workmanship and even out and out sabotage in every auto plant. The UAW did nothing to stop it, and may have encouraged it. Lizzie you seem to love...

    1940s/1950s cars vs. 1960s cars

The reason seventies cars were so lousy is, they were built to government specs. I am not joking. Starting in the mid sixties the federal government mandated safety and emissions standards with no input from the auto industry. One commentator said it reminded him of a convention of drunken...

    1940s/1950s cars vs. 1960s cars

You have a point. Sixties cars were tinny and flimsy in some ways, compared to forties cars. Fifties cars somewhere in between. There was a progression of cheapening starting really with the Korean War. Because of materials shortages chrome got sleazier, radiators and other parts made of copper...

whats the closest thing to Traveling back in Time? to get a feel of times past?

Depending where you go in the world you could find yourself in a society that is 20, 100, even 1000 years behind the times. In natural settings you could find places the same as they were millions of years ago.

    What was your first car...???

I drove mine with no "camber compensator" and never had a problem. Neither did any of the professional drivers who road tested them when they were new. Neither did the government testers who tested them in 1972, and issued a report clearing the Corvair of being unusually dangerous to drive...

    What was your first car...???

I had a 61 Corvair way back when. I read Nader's book, twice. I seem to be the only person in the world who actually read it. This was the beginning of my skepticism towards all self proclaimed experts and their media campaigns.

If you could solve just one mystery....

I just remembered an unsolved mystery I heard about years ago in Tom McCahill's magazine column. He told it as the most mysterious thing that had happened to him. In 1930 he ran a garage in New York called the Murray Hill Garage. One of his customers was a young doctor. The afternoon of...

Why did everything look so....crappy? in the 1970s

Yeah the drugs had a lot to do with the crappy movies and music.

Why did everything look so....crappy? in the 1970s

As for the music, Frank Zappa had an interesting take on this as he did on a lot of things. He said when he started in the music business in the late 50s there were a lot of good records. There was a lot of rubbish but there was a lot of good music too. The music business was dominated by old...

Why did everything look so....crappy? in the 1970s

"cheap" fashions date back to the twenties or earlier. But they were made to resemble their more expensive originals as closely as possible. "mod" fashions from the sixties were something different. They were meant to be eye catching and gaudy, and to be out of style and discarded after 6...

    Coldest Weather I've been in

Canadian here, this September has been the nicest and warmest I remember. All summer was nice, never very hot and lots of rain. I know that doesn't sound good but the farmers are happy everything growing like mad.

Why did everything look so....crappy? in the 1970s

You know how excited young fanbois get over a new Apple product or a new video game system? That is what it was like every year at new model introduction time. Can you imagine anybody being excited today to see the new Fords Chevs or Dodges?

Why did everything look so....crappy? in the 1970s

You are not in the minority. Between 1949 and 1957 cars advanced tremendously. From 1957 to 1967 there was relatively little advance. From 1968 to 1980 quality, performance, economy, drivability, engine life, appearance, and value for money all took a nose dive. Around 1985 they started making...

Why did everything look so....crappy? in the 1970s

You should have seen the cars. They outdid even the music, movies and fashions in crappiness. I was there, and you are 100% right. The country descended into a level of crappiness it has never completely recovered from.
