Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

Irish Spring still a best seller in Canada. The supermarket I shop at has it on sale, or Dial, an even older brand. They don't have Lifebuoy. I heard it was taken off the market because it is poison or dangerous, but other stores have carbolic soap.

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

In Canada 'caker' has a different meaning. It comes from the Italian 'mangiacake' and is used to describe a certain type of anglo saxon Canadian. I'm sure the Italian version comes from the English cake eater and was adapted for their use. Here is a website devoted to Caker cooking which will...

Can anyone explain what it means to call someone a jelly bean or jelly roll? I believe it was an expression used in the south in the twenties to describe the male counterpart to a flapper. Does anyone know ?

Seperating myth from reality: Nazi secret tech development projects

The other day read an article on the V2 that claimed it actually hurt the Nazi war effort. It seems they built 6000 of them and each one cost as much as a 4 engine bomber but only 3000 were used, and they were only good for one flight. The alcohol fuel for one flight took 30 tons of potatoes to...

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

Never heard that one exactly but there used to be a lot of similar phrases like 'billy o' 'old ned' 'old nick' 'old scratch' usually referring to the devil. A lady would not say 'I am going to raise the devil' still less would she say 'I am going to give them hell'.

"Vintage" foods that are still with us today.

Can we add pineapple upside down cake to the list? I made one a while back and when I told some friends the older ones said "I haven't had pineapple upside down cake in years" the young ones said "what is a pineapple upside down cake?" I was surprised.

"Vintage" foods that are still with us today.

How far back does the fried breakfast as we know it extend? Early 20th, or is it Victorian? See this analysis of a 1762 painting of a tavern interior. Notice the gent in the black coat and hat, being served a plate of ham and eggs by a pretty waitress.

    Who has cider fermenting?

If it freezes you can make applejack.... skim the ice off the top all winter and what is left is applejack. Or if you live in Maine or a very cold climate let the keg freeze solid then bore a hole and drain out the unfrozen center. This is called frozen heart applejack, aka cider oil, essence of...

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

If the parents were married the children are legitimate. As one old doctor said, the first baby can arrive any time but the second takes 9 months. Especially in farming families in the olden days it was considered prudent to get married only after the bride was pregnant. The family farm really...

Things You Learn as an Old Car Driver

W O Bentley of Bentley car fame was a big fan of the Cadillac, believe it or not. At one time American cars were well thought of in Europe. Maurice Hendry in his book on Cadillac, told a story that took place in the 30s. It was about a man who left his hotel in Switzerland at dawn to drive to...

    Dawn of a New Epoch

A few months ago I read a book on trees and the clearing of trees by civilization. We have been altering the landscape and weather patterns for thousands of years by clearing forests and planting crops. Ancient Greeks complained about the ecological damage done by deforestation. In late Roman...

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

The education system we have today was developed from one invented in Germany in the late 18th century. King Frederick of Prussia wanted a system that would take undisciplined illiterate yokels and transform them into disciplined soldiers. This system was adapted in the late 19th and early 20th...
