I've listened to most of George Fielding Eliot's commentaries on CBS news during the war. His voice reminds me very much of my junior high science teacher.
One of my relatives goes to the Fox theater regularly. An acquaintance of my wife works there. They call it "The Fabulous Fox Theater". They're not kidding.

I'm only a little bit surprised by that.
When these things happen today, whether by alcohol, accident or design, the video would be posted somewhere before her date got her dress pulled back down. We've come so far.
Well if we go with the stories told by the at least 20,000 people who saw the whole thing but couldn't possibly have been there, I would have to go with there were absolutely no foundation garments in evidence. :p
Either way, it would have made the rest of the social season rather awkward.
We've got a walkup DQ here. It's on its second owner since it started in early days of DQ. The company always wanted them to build a new building but they are landlocked and it would have required relocating. It also makes enough money from March to October that the owner has no other job and...
Cremation has not been common here until recent years. The reason is understandable given the escalating cost of a traditional funeral. In my limited experience the cremation had been done already and the urn was placed at the front of the chapel or whatever the venue happened to be.
I have...
I started working in the "adult" world when I was younger than most. Most of my customers were at least a generation and usually more older than I was. Given that, I have had an unusual view of mortality and how long people are remembered. Many of those people were important men in their time...
That's right up there with another completely worn out buzzword, "artisanal", which is ridiculous enough on most any of the things it is used on but when I saw it on bologna I knew we had gone over the edge.
Obnoxiousness is not directly connected to perceived importance and a grandiose vision of self but it does seem to make the disease progress to the acute stage.
Indeed. It is most commonly ISO, which I believe came from your shores. Companies here sometimes fly a flag that they have installed a special pole for advertising their certification. It really reminds me of the Better Business Bureau since it seems to have become something one pays dearly to...
It's a shallow buzzword world. And it gets shallower every day.
My saddle burr for today is mission statements.
If you feel the need to post a huge sign in the lobby assuring me you're an honest guy only out to serve your community I'm immediately assuming I need to be wary.
I seem to remember Rocky and Bullwinkle airing, at least in later years, with Tennessee Tuxedo, Underdog, Mr. Peabody and Sherman and Commander McBragg among others. Were these cartoons connected or was it just how they were scheduled?
When my first wife and I separated I lived in an apartment building for a time. One of my neighbors was a young man from Chicago who had a car alarm so sensitive that a hard rain would set it off. The weekly 5am garbage truck going by or any poor sap accidentally brushing it getting into an...
I got a late start watching the show, but it was very good. It took a lot for me to plan to be home to watch a show consistently in pre streaming days, but that was one I tried not to miss.
Saw this on another site. Just like the one that appears in our old gas station thread from time to time. I'd love to have it.

The ability to examine and recognize our weaknesses and try to improve them is a sign of maturity beyond average. A lot of people it seems live their entire lives never developing the ability or desire to reflect on their own existence. While being honest with ourselves is desirable, we can also...
