Rick,
Alan's method for attaching the wind cord is probably the easiest and works great but I thought I might mention another method I saw on a vintage hat I once owned. The hat was a vintage Stephen L. Stetson with the patented Carter Detachable Sweatband attachment method. The wind cord was...
Ole, thanks for the tip about Buckaroo and his ply ribbons.
T Jones, the hat looks great. I like the shortened ribbon tail. I have several of those Open Roads with the diamond liner made in the late 70's or 80's. The felt is softer but nothing like one from the mid 60's or earlier. Definitely...
Welcome Lt !
The Fed IV is a great choice for a new production hat. I think you will really enjoy those hats while also getting some experience in working with an open crown hat.
T Jones,
Great job on the crown of that Open Road! The straighter sides look very nice. How old was that hat? Was it an older one that was easier to recrease?
I prefer the simple and clean look of Ole's ribbon. I love those old multi-ply ribbons. I have just enough left of a vintage tan...
If it is a newer Stetson they can be difficult to reshape because they have so much shellac in the felt. I tried to reshape a newer Stetson Open Road and it didn't work out very well. I could never get rid of the remnants of the old crease. If it is an older Stetson made in the mid 60's or...
Great hats guys!
Aaron, that is a beautiful Stetson! I'm probably going to be embarrassed I asked the question but what is "OFAS"?
Rick, great Nutria! I wish I could find a nice Nutria in my size.
Rick, very cool hat! The ribbon does have an Open Road look to it but the brim looks a little wide for an Open Road clone. I have a feeling that hat was made before Stetson started naming hats Open Road. Great hat!
His repro's are very good. I have both the DC-3 and 4 engine pin from him. They are very well made.
David & Lefty, thanks for the info about the pins. I knew Stetson erroneously put the DC-3 pin on the Stratoliner but I never knew there were vintage 4 engine pins. I just assumed any 4 engine...
Thanks Buler and Tom. I don't really need them but would like to have at least one key for each of my two suitcases. If you do get around to making any more inserts you can count me in for a set.
I haven't had time to stop by the plastic store here but I have a feeling they may be able to...
Lefty, the pin in the middle of your photo is a reproduction, correct? Or did Stetson eventually make a pin that looked like a Stratoliner and not the DC-3?
Thanks everyone for your recommendations. I've been pretty busy lately so I haven't tried contacting Buler. I knew he had made some before but I didn't realize he had a thread showing how he did it until David posted the link. I have two 100 cases and one still has it's inserts. They are in very...
I know this is a long shot but thought I would give it a try anyway. I have a nice Stetson 100 suitcase but it is missing the plastic inserts. If anybody has some and would like to sell them please let me know. Thanks.
