Congratulations Lorne! Being from South Texas, I have seen quite a few Shudde Brothers hats and they all have been westerns or Open Road style hats. That is why I thought that was an unusual hat for them to make and was probably a renovation. Great find! -

I think Stetson didn't start using that liner until the late 80's or 90's. It is the same liner they use today on westerns. -

Nice hat! Shudde Brothers is a well known hat shop in Houston, Texas. Besides selling hats and making custom hats they did renovation work for Stetson. If it is a renovated hat it will have "RENSH" stamped on the back of the sweatband. Here is a link to one of Alan's hats that has the "RENSH"... -

It does make for a very unique hat. I bet you have the only one in Portugal! Unless they don't keep that information, I would think Resistol could tell you why and exactly how many were made by the order number on the tag. -
I love the Fed IV!!
I always had the same problem with lining up the pinch on my hats. It wasn't until I had Art Fawcett make me a band block that I realized my head was off center! I am a long oval and it is very noticeable on the band block that the front of the oval is off to one side. -

llamaegg, you should try to measure to the nearest 1/8" but I think you are probably going to need a 59. It might fit a little big at first but should shrink down nicely after wearing it awhile. My measurement for custom hats is 23 3/8" and I wear a 60 in the Fed IV. They always feel a little... -

Possible origin of the use of X's for price/quality level designation
The feather cost almost as much as the hat. Twenty shillings for the feather and 37 shillings for the hat. Is the hat band another option for an additional three pounds? This has nothing to do with our discussion of the origin of X's but the total cost of the hat in this article is confusing to me. -
