Ha, on that subject, I have one of these, which can take two iPads easily, and a lot more besides.
I've used it occasionally for carry-on and also for easy hiking without a rucksack.
With regard to re-waxing, I bought a couple of second hand Barbours recently and rewaxed them myself. One tin per jacket at £10/tin. It was messy, but took about an hour and the jackets were dry in a couple of days.
Apparently it takes 6 weeks or so if you send them to Barbour.
I bought maybe 10 or so items from Japanese Rakuten pre-Brexit with no problems whatsoever.
Since the collapse of the pound and the near-certainty of customs fees now, I don't find it worth the effort any more.
Great if you're in the US though.
I just bought a decent leather hole punch for about £10 off Amazon. No probs at all.
If the belt's too long now, just cut something off the pointy end.
@Otter, there used to be a UK guy who made the Where Eagles Dare smocks, Extreme Outdoor Clothing or something, but he seems to have stopped trading now.
I know I've slagged off Ventile here, but it works well on the kit above and would be adequate for non-serious mountain (or city) use in...
Yeah, if they were £100 less I wouldn't hesitate, but £405 makes me stop and think, especially for a novelty item I wouldn't get much use out of.
Having said that, apparently when you wear the smock, you turn into a steely-eyed, chisel-jawed mountain man who laughs in the face of danger and...
That's an interesting link, @Ticklishchap.
People often seem to associate being posh with having money, but there are plenty of poor posh people around, as well as lots of rich posh wannabees, but never will bes. It's all to do with background, attitude, behaviour and interests.
Ha. To me, posh is simply upper class, or maybe upper middle class. It comes from breeding, refinement and deportment. It's not something money can buy.
As a Scot, definitely jumper. Sweater sounds posh English to me.
I get tank top, but it has a very 70s connotation to me, and would now use sleeveless jumper instead.
I really like the Schuster one and also the beige army one above. I see quite a few Chinese copies of that on eBay.
I keep looking at this modern reproduction of the Telemark smock from Lancashire Pike, although their prices are very high:
They also do this army repro:
Every one of the participants had a story to tell, but I find Gene Krantz to be one of the most inspirational and awe inspiring, especially after reading his book. To go from being a fighter pilot (impressive in itself) to basically making up the procedures for space flight and the landings...
I find the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo period fascinating and have lots of books, biographies, and dvds of that time. I even have a maintenance manual for the LM, should it ever break down.:) Visiting Cape Canaveral was a great experience, especially seeing so much that I'd read about.
The...
Some interesting stuff on the Thedi site, but the lack of pricing is annoying. I've had to email for some bags prices.
Apart from that, I saw these in canvas on their FB page and think they would look good toned down and without all the brand patches, but it seems these were one-offs:
I see quite a lot of that (relatively speaking) on the streets of Edinburgh. Invariably worn with a flat cap, tan brogues and khaki-ish trousers.
To me, it seems to be trying too hard, but I can understand that it's an upmarket uniform for ex-Barbour types.
Here's the bags I use most. Two each of three similar styles, but each has its purpose.
First, work bags. Top, oil pull leather, hand made locally by Mckenzie Leather. I prefer the look, but now use the Filson briefcase more because of the zip to the main compartment. I was tempted by the...
To me, a messenger bag is anything with one strap, but I accept there are further distinctions.
For work, my main bag is a Filson briefcase, but for city holidays I prefer the Fjallraven Ovik (I think) messenger, as it has a zip, whilst many don't.
Nowadays, rucksacks are strictly for the...
I have 4 bags that I use regularly and never felt remotely unmanly. I keep meaning to post a pic.
I much prefer messenger-type bags to rucksacks as they're designed for one shoulder, whereas rucksacks always feel awkward to me when using only one strap.
This doesn't get worn as much as it should, hence the sale. It's maybe unique, as it's not standard colours, being black Melton wool with cordovan FQHH trim on the shoulders, sleeve ends, pockets and half belt. Lining is black cotton drill. There's only two outer pockets, no inner.
