Here's a photo which I love. It's from LIFE magazine taken by Howard Sochurek in 1958 (I've taken a photo of it in that Japanese flight jacket book "Suit Up" since I can't find an online copy). Why do I love it? Because the major or lieutenant colonel stroking his chin on the right is wearing a...
They also fit tall thinnish fellows like me, unlike the older nylon jackets. I love them too.
Also, we have a dedicated thread for nomex CWU jackets, so perhaps a mod can move Clothes Horse's post to that thread instead.
I don't think the original designer intended the pockets to have hands stuffed in them, just impedimenta. Were these originally supposed to be motorcycle jackets? If so, then the pockets were high to keep them and their contents from squeezing into your lower abdomen as you sit on a bike. I...
Here's a rare opportunity to pick up size L or XL Alpha Replica MA-1 jackets, the 2000s Replica series. I had one of these but moved it on as the fit was a bit off for me. The cuffs on these are "incorrect" since they're a heavy ribbed cloth, but they have the advantage of being tough. The fit...
Last night I watched a great documentary on PBS called "Space Men". It was about the USAF's early space program with balloons and medical testing which culminated in the jump from 102,000 ft by Captain Kittinger. The USAF doctor who was the prime mover behind the program developed the medical...

^^^ When I imagine a "leather jacket" I imagine it made of a heavy but soft leather like that deerskin, not thin goat, stiff horsehide, or cheap cowhide. Something that fits, drapes, and feels like cloth not armour.
The military jackets with wool insulation have pile, so it will be thicker and might not be as amenable to this sort of hack. But that's speculation on my part. To anyone who's thinking of doing this make sure your sewing skills are good since you won't want to screw up your favourite jacket!
Nick, if you're 6'2" and can wear a jacket which is only 24" long then you have an unnaturally short torso! Others be careful. For comparison, I'm all legs but at 6'1" I need 25" or 26" to cover my belt.
There are plenty of photos of these jackets being worn loose "back in the day", so nobody should fall into the modern trap of thinking they have to fit tight (same with A-2s). Remember, the USAF issued these originally in four sizes, and one length, so almost no one was issued one that fit properly.
