Great news! My grandfather was stationed there during the early days of WWII. In fact, my grandparents were married in New Orleans in 1942. Perhaps on base.

Looking at it, it's not that simple. The pencil curl won't allow the brim to snap down with any degree of elegance and it certainly doesn't end up looking like a fedora. I toyed with the idea of having a professional do a fedora conversion, but it's just too nice a hat. I think I'll have to...
I'm disappointed not to actually *see* any pencil skirts illustrated. The so-called newsboy look that the girl on the street was wearing - blech. It's like 1930s-goes-hiphop. Which I thought they'd already done given the popularity of the homburg with that set.
Still, maybe some good will...
Gorgeous. Isn't that a "Collegiate Special"?
I love the stock '32 Ford, too. I'd love to own one, but an original is probably never in the works. I have lots of pictures, though!
Say what you like about the hot rodders, but their interest in old Fords has spawned...
Why not have a submarine weekend?
Submarine enthusiasts who want to have the complete (or, at least, US and German) experience can fly into Chicago and tour U-505 at the Museum of Science and Industry, then rent a car and drive up to Muskegon, Michigan and spend the night on the USS Silversides...
It does look like a raw edge, though there's so little contrast between the binding and the felt on my St. Regis that it might not show up in anything but the sharpest photograph.
Judge Cardozo liked a fedora-type pinch in his homburg as well, it would appear:

I have a sportcoat with this coloring and drape, but it's a heavy, soft cotton and I doubt that a suit this dark would be made from cotton, would it? I've been reading descriptions of fabrics online and trying to determine what it might be. I really like the look of this suit and I've often...
Well, it's not a pen, but it is from Parker. I just picked this up at a Salvation Army store last weekend. Think it'll still be good? The price was certainly right.

Boy, those shoes in the original post have me tempted. At just over twice what I normally pay for my standard "Dockers" oxford, if I can get a real shoe made from real leather and a proper leather sole, I think I'll make the switch next time I need shoes.

Mellencamp's
Well, I started researching Mellencamp's. Apparently they were quite the institution in downtonw Ypsi. They're gone now, as I found an article written about their closing. No dates, however, except a photograph dated 1953.

I'm glad for all the encouragement, fellows. I'm still very curious to know the time period for this hat - and to see one of those gorgeous period advertisments!

I used to be. I guess I still am, I methodically comb change for old coins, but I haven't actually purchased anything in about ten years. I was deep enough into it at one point to know that you designed the penny back in 1909 and that obverse design is still going strong. Pity they made you...
I just bought this (actually, I bought a fedora and this came along, I think this turned out to be the better purchase). I've never been into homburgs the same way I am fedoras, but I'm really becoming attached to this hat. Probably because I pick it up, put it on, and stare at myself in the...
You know, I've been thinking about this for a couple days and I guess I'm not bothered by the idea of putting this canteen into service. There are lots and lots of them around and not much demand for them. I feel differently about rarer and less durable objects like uniform pieces than I do...
It's not the be-all, end-all of shaving but...
I've had good luck with my GEM Micromatic, C.O. Bigelow (Proraso) shaving cream, and a brush (I don't use my mug as much more than a brush holder). I make one pass, rinse my face, and then make a second. I use Treet blades currently, but...
