Some random thoughts....
On the "modern culture of intoxication," this is looking back at history through rosy glasses. Beyond the general sentiment that it's not hard to see how the vast majority of cultures throughout history have imbibed some mind altering substance, it's not even that...
I've been selling the silverbelly OR/Campdraft look to new member xbeatles4x in the 'relatively new to hats' thread and figured I had better put my money where my mouth is.
Ca. 1950's 3x Open Road
I'm still sticking to my guns and saying that the Campdraft is going to be more versatile. Obviously there's some manner of personal taste there. But I just think thin ribbons work better as more casual hats.
It works with a lot. Take a look at the Open Road and Campdraft threads on the board. I'd actually argue that the Campdraft makes a better casual hat than the Fed.
Concur with both the gentlemen above, with the added comment that silverbelly is an exceptionally easy color to match as well. A silverbelly Campdraft, emulating the famous Stetson Open Road, is a classic look. It's considered a sort of 'dress western' by some. But it's a versatile look that...
Hell on Wheels season 3. I really, really, like this show, but so many of the hats are just awful. I think quite a few of them are actually wool. Several are obviously modern hats with blocked in crowns.
Thank you kind gentlemen! It's been a very long process, but a big weight has just been lifted off my shoulders. Well, until both of my advisers started saying I should look into a PhD program.:eeek:
Parents were very proud, my brother got his MBA last year so I had to keep up at least ;)...
Despite the clouds out here by the ocean, it's actually a warm day here in SF. I'm wearing my Supernatural Milan in front of the SFSU library, holding the reciept for my MA thesis, which completes my masters degree!
Here's the best screencap I could grab of it. Cavanagh was my thought too when I saw the part of the crest, but then I looked at my Cavanagh Homburg and the crest is red on the right hand side, which I assume would have been consistent (if not, kinda defeats the purpose of the crest)...
Akubras in particular do shrink up over time. Many folks do buy a size larger and let the hat do its thing. You can shrink a sweatband slightly by moistening it and placing the hat atop a lampshade. You can also pad out the sweatband with papertowels, weatherstripping foam, felt sizing...
Carbon grey federation wouldn't be a bad choice, but the ribbon is not quite as tall.
Also, if you want to get really specific in your search for a Bogey hat, look for a felted edge, widely known as the Cavanagh edge, or the mode edge. It's a process which can no longer be done that involves...
Well, there's no hat police to stop you, but it may be uncomfortable to wear a fur felt hat in Florida summer heat. Most here have straw hats for hot weather in addition to fur felt hats.
Akubras are made for the Australian outback, so it's not unheard of to see a felt hat under the hot sun...
New hat vs vintage in what sense? Styling? No, it doesn't look like a 'gangster fedora' like Capone might wear, but it is a classic and much emulated style of hat.
