The first three are all 7's, the Wizard is a 7 1/8 - 7 3/8, the CCC is 7 1/8, and the 6 panels are 7 1/8 and 7 1/4.
I'm a 6 7/8 with a short back and sides, but I can get away with wearing most of these here. The first three fit a treat, the CCC one panel is OK too. The two 6 panels are...
Not sure if there is any significance, just variations on a theme? But the last two are only 6 panel, and they are definitely budget caps. The better ones are 8 panel.
And the last two...
These are really cheap and cheerful. No liner, no label, 25cents?, card sweatband...
Really reminds me of the Lewis Wickes Hine photos of the Empire State going up, and the guys having lunch on the girder...
Well that's it.... Any help with some dates...
The CCC Cap...
The only one peice out of the seven...
And the rather snazzy fabric...
Again, I'm really struggling with a date... half of me thinks it is early, maybe 20's, the other half as late as the '60's... (The label makes me lean towards early...)
next up, the Wizard!
This one is the best of the bunch by a long way...
The sweat at the peak is leather, the band is card.
The label makes me think this one could be '25 - '35...
Hidden between the peak and body are two small holes about an inch apart. Not sure what they...
Here they are in more detail...
Three of the caps are the same maker, Sam Berger Hat Co., and the same model 'Fashion Club CAPS DE LUXE'. (The top three 8 panels)
This one is my favourite of the three...
The hat band is a nasty oilskin type material, brittle with age...
It started with a thread in classifieds posted by Cookie for a job lot of newsboys on ebay. The link had been deleted but it didn't take long to find, and even better, it still had 9 hours to run!
The description didn't go into too many details, but I liked what I saw and thought it was...
Here it is...
Here it is! Cheers Alan :eusa_clap
Now I have to work out exactly what to do with it... as can be seen from the photo's, the leather is in bad shape. There is a lot of cracking all over, and rips and tears in the weak points. I don't think it would...
My wifes just emailed me to say I have a huge parcel waiting for me at home! :eusa_clap
Just a shame I'm at work, and have to wait 9 hours before I can have a shufti... :eusa_doh:
Just read the description again, and think you may be right Smithy, didn't realise the jacket changed hands at Dunkirk... If I was in their shoes, carting a sheepskin jacket around in the middle of an evacuation in June doesn't make much sense!
"The original owner was unfortunately shot...
Something funny about that... Especially as fags were most definatley not in short supply during the war... I think troops were issued them? If not they could pick them up cheaply in the Naafi...
My Grandfather bought his Irvin (I'm guessing around '44) for £5... A fair old wad of cash back...
Not clocked that one Smithy, but had noticed someone selling what they say is their fathers Irvin, a navigator on Lancasters during the war...[huh]
A peice of family history... just can't get my head round why they want to sell it...:(
collar overhaul
Never did like the manky Sidcot suit collar tacked on to the Bsa Irvin...
Finding a replacement Irvin collar was unlikely, so the next option was another Sidcot collar, just in better nick...
So I got my old mate Dickie at Sabre Sales to look out for a likely...
That's a great looking cap though! But why the high price? Large size? Or is this the going rate now?
BTW, cheers for the recent heads up in classifieds on that group lot for sale Cookie ;)
7 vintage caps for the same price as this one....[huh]
Pics coming, I promise...:o
Great!
Hello fellow cap connoisseur's!
Not a brilliant pic I'm afraid... vintage 'Utican'
And my modern one from 'Miller Hats'...
This 'instant collection' is a very recent ebay purchase....
They turned up yesterday. All look to be vintage, but there are issues with the peaks...
Hello and welcome Sabre. Am I right in assuming there may be a link between your avatar and this Irvin...?
Nice to see a jacket still in the family :eusa_clap
