I'd like to see natural colored silk linings, like the ones
used in older Borsalinos. They're durable, breathe, and
look timeless. I can probably find pictures if necessary.
I'd like to join the chorus in saying I don't want to see
plastic at the top of any more hat linings.
Okay, this is a cool hat and I don't deserve it.
I'm guessing it's no later than 1940s and very likely earlier.
It's a Miller of Denver Colorado (not to be confused with
today's Miller Hats of Houston, TX). The felt is thinner than a
lot of dress hats you find today and the ribbon, as...
I'm with Shortbow. Not a derby in sight.
1920s-30s at the earliest, I'd guess. Look at the women's hats.
If it really is Italy, it could even be early 50s.
I have a framed albumen photo of Milan taken in 1908-
I defer to the photographic historians among us, but
that doesn't look...
Thanks- I guess there IS interest
I am awaiting payment from a member for this hat.
If for some reason he changes his mind, I'll be in touch, rtravler.
Meanwhile I recommend you post responses to a few topics
anywhere in the Lounge and get your post count high enough
to use PM. Otherwise...
Looks like a 1930s picture?
Another 2 3/8" brim, 6" crown, similar to the
one discussed in this thread:
does anyone please know the height of the crown and the brim size on this hat?
But oh, what a difference a ribbon and edge treatment make.
Either Cavanagh/Mode Edge or overwelt...
Sounds like you dodged a bullet.
I wonder if you've contacted any of the
full service hatters (who clean hats) we know of
(Batsake, North Valley, Optimo, Gary White, Rocky Mountain, etc)
to see if they would consider training you in person
for a week? I don't think you'd constitute...
That's exactly what I was wondering. Thanks.
I'm just amazed at the uniformity of the effect you
get, across a variety of hats. I was hoping you'd indicate
for which felt it works best. Your instructions are good
and clear and I'm sure many of us can follow them. But
I'm not sure...
I did change my post, and was about to go back
and remove it entirely and let it go, but now I can't.
Bartenders are free to do so.
But for now I will simply say that this is just the sort
of lack of sensitivity to non-christians that I am objecting to.
I would like to hope this is a...
I appreciate the sentiment to enjoy a holiday,
but feel uncomfortable hearing about the personal
beliefs of others, particularly in a forum on hats.
I know there is a social aspect here, but I assert that
if I were to post about atheism, zoroastrianism, or paganism,
it would not be...
Okay, here's an odd one. Marked nothing more than "XXX Beaver".
I'm guessing it must have started life as a trooper hat or something,
based on the grommets for a cord and how darn stiff it is. By stiff I
mean STIFF. Almost as stiff as a derby, and four times as thick.
The fiinish is a...
Teardrops without tears?
Very nice and clear.
I personally prefer a rougher look- more angular.
For the center dome I like to use a hat crown block
to push it up and then apply steam.
One question: have you found you can create this
effect for any hat, or just the nicer/vintage ones?
Mothing
Okay, here are the pix of the moth bites.
The next picture ain't great, but you can kinda
see the horizontal line of dots, extending from the
ruler. Another above and to the right of the bow.
Slightly out of focus, on left:
Top, center of crown (above "14 3/4")...
Great Thread!
There's a sweatband feature I think is significant,
but I don't know its name. It seems to appear on
late 40s to early 50s hats. You can see it on a lot
of the Johnnyphi hats and on the Portis Supreme
I'm selling in the Classifieds section now. Here's an
example on...
I might, but there's one person ahead of you.
If he doesn't take it, let's talk.
If he doesn't take it, I'll post some detailed pictures
of the mothing, just so everything is clear. But I do
think the mothing is no big deal on this particular lid.
I'll be interested to hear if that thread asterisk
abrades your forehead. Seems ill-conceived.
But the overall idea isn't, and I look forward to
trying it.
So how do we handle hats in multiple categories?
Here's a Knox 20 I already posted in the Satin Finish/Long Hair Club thread:

I don't know much about this style, though I have seen others
on the Lounge. It appears to me to be something like the
Stetson "3 Way". You can wear it as a homburg (shown pinched,
but pops out, too):
Or as a snap brim fedora:
Classic 2 1/4" tall Cavanagh bow (shown with flash...
