Here is a MODERN Knox from 2014! Levine hats from St Louis licensed the name from HatCo and commissioned the "Dr. Knox" hat. Even produced little copper Knox hat pins! This in the color "Cognac" (a kind of light/medium copper brown) with 2" wide ribbon, open crown and 2 5/8" raw edge brim...
YES!!!!! The style and name go back a ways....here are two 1860's examples....first is a repo made from an example in a museum.....the second is a real officers hat from the time.....
Anything BUT the telescope crown is NOT a Pork Pie....as Pappy himself would attest to as well!!!;)

Yes I find it all very interesting too......I would remark that the listed qualities and ovals/colors are regular stock.....it does say custom made styles in a variety of colors, regular and long ovals, and qualities were available with an 8 week wait for delivery.......
I have always wondered...
Circa 1960 catalog entry for the Open Road which shows well where 3X fits in the line up!! It is interesting to note the OR was being offered in ALL qualities including a Royal Quality version with a 2 1/2 inch brim:eek:. The rest were all offered with a 2 3/4 brim....
M;)
Here is a 1932 ad which among other things lists the "NEW" price for a 3X Stetson being reduced from 16.50 to 15.00......(Standard Quality now being $5)
To bring things back on track to the 3X Stetson..:rolleyes:;)..here is a circa 1950 3X standing counter card right next to a Royal for comparison.......
Each 5 1/2" by 7"

YES he did...Family fights are sometimes the best!!!:D
Well it is fun to have something different.....and a cool serviceable result besides!!!
It was a nice addition and story for this thread!!!
M;)
Red,
That hat is awesome!
As to Stephen L Stetson, he did not "steal" the name. It was his name, he was a grand nephew to John B Stetson....
More on all that here: https://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/stephen-l-stetson-hats.39021/
I know this is a older contribution....have seen your new...
WOW Bob...deal of the century!!! I would love an OR style 3X like that!!
As for the pin.....I will keep my eye out for another for you....I have a place where I keep all my unused hat pins....;)
M;)
Here is a 40's Stetson 3X......debossed "The Silver Spur".....likely a commisioned or stamped for a special event (those here may be in the know) as I can find NO referance to such a model in my catalogs.......
More on this hat here...
Here is a late 40's Stetson 3X labeled "the Silver Spur" not sure if model named or more likely commisioned or stamped for a Special Event........6 inch crown, 2 3/4 raw edge brim. I like the flange to the brim a lot! Pleased to find this in my size!!:eek::D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D Onionskin behind...
Michael,
Yes your coat is really nice......good one there! Mine is a summer weight raw linen......not the awesome cashmere like yours.....seem to be the same weave.....so much alike it got my attention.;)
Really cool!
Best,
Mark:)
Here is a 60's Stetson "Derringer" commissioned and sold by Eddie Bauer. Came with the cool flintlock derringer pin that I promptly removed. Came to me unworn but ill stored as it was/is pretty mothie! Felt is ok, but really hard to tell as it is very western stiff. But makes a good work...
Here is a 50's Stetson 3X Open Road clone (they actually made MANY such hats some named other names, some just sold as their famous 3X quality). Came to me without a liner, I found this correct period liner to replace........(love these colorful 3X liners).
M;)
Here is one passing threw my hands soon on it's way to Steur in Holland......a Stetson 3X with mode edge. Solid 50's hat, wonderful felt in a light blue/grey.....
Wanted to record it here as ONCE mine as I am unlikely to find one in my size.....:(
M:)
