Are we not allowed to refer to those as "Coolie hats" anymore?
Those hats, whatever they're called, are very popular in this area with migrant workers. Seems like every crew I see is outfitted with them - that or I only ever see the same crew in different fields.

Thanks! And what a great link in general.
It appears by that definition that I own no formal shoes.
Of course, one could have a discussion whether a dress shoe need be formal. After all, aren't business suits, while dressy, not considered "formal" attire?

I guess I don’t understand. What is open lacing? How does the lacing on the service shoes differ from the lacing on the boots originally posted?
Sorry for my ignorance.

It strikes me that with its handsome saddle reinforcement, and the semi-fancy toe cap, the World War Two U.S. Army Type II Service Shoe has a certain amount of "dress boot" style to it:
Anybody wearing a pair polished up with a suit?

Not to hijack, but I've been wanting to try on some 1920s hot jazz - the kind that is often mistaken for ragtime. Is it the same/related to Dixieland?

Crud! I saw this in passing at my inlaws on Sunday, and didn’t realize it wasn’t the version I’ve already seen. If I’d have known it was freshly produced, I’d have insisted we watch it (or gone home to watch it alone!).
Any chance it will be on the air again soon?

I recently read the above in a Shooting Times review. I never knew the Colt New Service was available in .357 Magnum. Did these use the pencil barrel, or was a heavy barrel fitted for the more-powerful round? If it used the pencil barrel, that would make the New Service the only Magnum I’m...
This is why I don’t ever complete anything. I’m a lazy writer, so when it gets hard, I quit.
It might be different if it meant putting food on the table. Heck, I know it does, because I have to muscle past writer’s block all the time when I’m briefing issues.

That was my assessment as well, but I was hoping my fellow loungers knew differently. It seems like a seersucker jacket or something would be a natural for this line, but I guess not.
Probably so. I know I can’t wait to wear my plaid jacket, come cool weather.

I recently acquired my grandfather's file safe, which had been stored in my parents' garage. It's too dark to take a picture, but it looks essentially like this, but in a bluer green.
Metal plaques affixed to the front and rear say "Protection Account Register" and inform me that my safe was...
I write in spurts, usually to lance the boil of my creativity. Most recently I was re-writing the story of Stagecoach set in an alternate-history 1939 Northern Michigan.
I don't claim to be good, but I have fun.

Charity shops, heck! My 70-year-old aunt recently told me about the summer of 1961, when she purchased a complete, dead-stock, 1920s boys outfit (breeches, shirt, cap, etc.) from a going-out-of-business sale in Northern Michigan. She got it as a Halloween costume.
The best part is, she held...
Check out Buildings of Detroit if you have not already. I’ve only just discovered it, but it appears to be a showcase of Detroit’s architectural glory, and includes an update on the current status of the building in question.

Even though summer seems like it’s now half over, I’ve been looking for a new summer hat, and I keep thinking of this ad:
(It’s from Plan59.com)
Unfortunately, they edited out the ad copy, so whatever the names of the hats were, is now lost. Can anyone identify them?
-Dave
I won’t say I wouldn’t touch a flathead six in a Forward Look car, but being as I have a 440 V8 in search of a worthwhile home, it might be tough...
