The felt is like most western weight felts, pretty stiff. I've had the best luck by getting a shallow 10x14 inch pan about 1/2" deep in boiling water and dipping the edge of the brim to soften the felt. Then I start working my brim curling tool around the brim, usually have to re-dip the brim...

Here lately I've been on the hunt for western style hats from some of the more "traditional" hatmakers. This Dobbs West got the nod today & I especially like how the gold 3 cord ribbon looks against the chocolate brown felt.
Here are a few pictures of the sweatband and the back seam. You are correct that this one is reeded. Don't feel like trying to turn the sweatband inside out as they can be brittle as you well know. Hope these pix help.
To start the weekend off right I decided to go with one of my newest arrivals this morning. Lamson Hubbard from way back in the day. I watched this hat for over 6 months, scared off by the wrinkled leather sweatband . Finally gave in to the awesome color combination and made it mine !
Tough call but I gotta go with the trim East Coast due to the color combination and the brim edge binding despite the fact I like the larger brim on the Sidewinder !
