I'm finding it hard to understand why my criticism of the 'Regards' signature has led to such heated responses, including needless personal abuse in the case of one OP. When I started the discussion, I was trying to get something off my chest but clearly it's hit a raw nerve, because the...
In fact, several people said that they found it cold, clipped, etc. It is you who clearly have a problem with this discussion and have to resort to meanness and spite.
I agree. I didn't mean the quality of the cover, more the image on it and what it conveyed. I worked in academic publishing before I moved sideways into property management. Good to hear from someone who worked in a similar or related sphere.
It's not burning hatred, merely dislike. I think you might be projecting a bit. It's you who are showing strong emotions about this because you seem to be so vehement in defending this 'innocuous' signature as if preserving it really meant something to you. Your vehemence leads you to say...
Going off topic, it's interesting that although we all use this phrase 'don't judge a book by its cover', we often do just that when we're choosing books. ... And usually with good reason.
In the British context, from which I write, I associate the rise of 'Regards' (and its variants) with the rise of an impersonal, process-driven bureaucracy that is increasingly petty and extreme, based on levelling everyone down to a lowest common denominator.
I appreciate that quite probably...
I thought, "Damn right too". But then you went on to explain your writings and I could 'sort of' see your point.
Thanks. In a way, I'm surprised that you could only 'sort of' see my point. ... But to be fair I think that if it hadn't been that signature it would have been something else...
You are rushing to judgement before you know the facts. That said, I should perhaps have explained them more clearly. In the case of this former friend, I spent many hours trying to sort out his problems. I took him out for meals and picked up the tab. I lent him some money to tide him over...
That's because I didn't fully explain the facts. Please see my reply to Hudson Hawk. It's interesting the way use of language can be suddenly revealing and tip the balance in a relationship sometimes. It was a kind of eureka moment, when I realised that helping this person was a complete waste...
I like it! Best to avoid typing the word at all. ... I wonder if anyone can explain why it seems to be so frequent these days. Perhaps it's just a sign of more generalised naff-ness.
I still thinks it sounds very harsh and off-putting. Certainly, when I'm thinking of working with someone, it counts against them (not always conclusively but initially) if they use the 'Regards' signature. In the UK context, it smacks of minor clerical or petty officialdom.
I can't believe someone's actually defended 'Regards' or 'Best Regards'. They sound so petty bourgeois - the sort of phrases used by a sales rep with a comb-over hairstyle and a cheap blazer. And yet they seem so common now - common in the sense of frequent, that is.
I don't mind cheers if...
I have to get this one off my chest! More and more often over the past few years, I have had work-related emails and sometimes even letters that close with 'Regards' or sometimes variants such as 'Kind' or 'Best' Regards, or 'Warm'/'Warmest' Regards. In the latter case, it's as if the heat level...
May I throw in another question: when did you own your first Woolly Pully? I bought my first aged 11, in 1977, inspired at the time my English master at school, because he wore an olive Army WP. I have owned and worn them ever since and it's now 2013!
