Hi Scott - hope you're well?
Is John going to make an AN-J-3?
I asked him about one following my purchase, but he felt that the market would be too small (and the design spec too vague).
Can't speak for the G&B product, but the pattern has really grown on me. My original Doniger AN-J-3 has to be the most comfortable of my leather flight jackets.
With respect Flashman, I don't want to appear to be acting like a dog with a bone here so I'll preface this by saying that I'm disputing neither your pride in your new purchase, nor Aero. I'm not going to address reproductions but simply focus on the source material.
Whether you like the...
It's not authentic for the mil. spec. A-2 (the wartime contracts were executed in horsehide or goatskin) - my A-2 (from 1942) was a McGregor Sportswear (Doniger) civilian A-2. The present AN-J-3 is also by McGregor Sportswear.
Thanks Coffee - it's my most comfortable jacket in use - can't beat the design of the bi-swing back. Never thought that I'd say that, as I'm not a fan of naval jackets. It's the mouton collar that puts me off (as a kid in the 70s everybody seemed to have cheap nylon or leather 'G-1s'), but the...
Thanks Feltfan - the jacket is a surprisingly good fit.
It is very thick (ca. 2 mm?), very soft and very pliable - essentially the same as the domestic capeskin used in John's early A-1. The colour, grain and raised scars are almost identical, albeit with much wear to the surface.
I'd plump...
John has sourced some new capeskin and is taking orders for A-1s. You'd have to ask him directly about capeskin for A-2 orders. It's comparatively harder to come by than other hides (and available in smaller quantities) so might be reserved for A-1 orders - worth a call.
I've had an original...
As a follow up the original post, the AN-J-3 arrived and it was a surprise. It's marked as a 40 and the vendor's measurements suggested that it would fit as such, but it's actually a larger 42 and with the bi-swing back it fits more like a 43. The sleeves are perfect for me and the length of...
