I can't shed much light on it, but I can say I have one, too.
Mine is a really great, super dark charcoal gray. It has an underwelt
that is ironed in such a way that it looks almost like a Cavanagh Edge.
Same box, same liner, same tags (except mine is a 7 1/2 Long Oval and
fits me like it was...
And, of course, some might say that a $7.50 hat from the
mid-30s is nicer in many ways than a $500 hat made today.
Depending on the hat.
As has been discussed to death here, there were skilled
hat making masters, economy of scale, and material supplies
in the 1930s Optimo can only...
Ha. If Borsalino could only make hats like that in the last thirty years!
No way is that a 1998 hat.
It is, however, a very nice hat. Congrats. There is a lot of talk
on the Lounge about when this style of hat was made. 50s and 60s?
Don't rub it in.
And imagine my surprise that Dinerman likes this one.
It's an outstanding hat. Thanks for showing us.
That bow is really unique- never seen that combination
of raw and bowed edges on the back. Say, Art...
Some nice boots here.
Anyone have a specific recommendation for very wide
boots? Red Wing isn't making most of their nicer boots
wide anymore. I'm keen to have a 5" or 6" pair of short nice
brown boots for summer wear (it doesn't get hot all that
often in the SF bay area) but can't seem...
Besides, who buys a fedora any more?
Wish I could get to that sale this weekend!!
There are bound to be great deals on hat making equipment
and supplies... maybe even some old hats.
Ouch. Since it says "Cavanagh Edge" on the
sweatband, it once had a Cav Edge. If it doesn't have
one now, and instead has a bound edge, that means it
was cut down at some point in the past.
Judging from the design on the edge of the sweatband,
which was also present on my really nice...
Sorry, but Tilleys aren't that cool if you wear them right-
with a bag over your head... :p
Now that's more like it. I like the pith helmet idea, too.
Maybe once he understands he's supposed to soak it first...
Ah, an awful lot of vintage panamas were treated that way.
Some of mine, for sure. It's not too bothersome, at least to me.
I don't really understand why they did it, though. It doesn't really
bleach the hat. But I think it does coat it, perhaps making it
possible to brush the panama?
I do own a copy.
But I found that page doing a quick Google Images search.
Wrightson did a lot of other good work, too. Of course most
famously on Swamp Thing.
Lurid color? It's washed out. You can see over the bow a blotch
showing that it was once a much darker hat. That hat is shot
and filthy. It's also a size "Large", which tells you right there that it
is not, as claimed, from the "Golden Age" of mens' hats.
