The corrugation feature of the Borsalino has been around long before the 40's and 50's. Two of my pre-1920's Borsalino's had it. Guessing it debuted around the turn of the 20th century.
This was purchased last year from a lounger and the photo is from that member. Hat looks the same and is in the same condition since purchased.
I'm not sure what the official designation is - cuenca perhaps?

size 58 and the interior circumference measures 22...
Couldn't bring myself to cut this old hat down. I'll offer it here for $100 shipped within USA. Not a bad price for a near new condition 7 1/8 Stetson from the late 20's/Early 30's
That was the confusion for me as well. There is no way that Scottf is between a 7 1/4 and 7 3/8 if this hat is a true 7 1/8 and at 22.5" circumference it is true to its size.
