that's very pretty
by the crown of course, and the holes were kept at bay for a while with kangaroo hide which you can see peeping through..the 'holy' look is also highly prized by country dwellers here and the more battered your hat, the more authentic or 'dinkum' you appear..some outback pubs...
face blocking
yeah I think the rule is that a sharp peak on the crown will even out the arithmetic 'mean' of the face, and conversely a person with a lean face evens up a round block..if my limited knowledge of the correct terms is adequate
This Akubra Featherweight Squatter was my main work and road hat for nearly 20 years before being retired to the farm for the occasional bit of steer-rump belting. But like Borat's wife..I have a new one.
dowery?
that would be the widow's share in a property, and I ain't dead yet :) as opposed to a dowry..which is what property a woman brings to a marriage, usually supplied by the father..and my wife thinks my hat fetish is something that has to be put up with as long as it doesn't cost too...
frankie
I think I know the photo of Frank you mean, in the studio? This one might have a slightly wider brim, perhaps a more tropical design, and it interestingly must predate the very similar polypropylene ones of the same colour that are fairly common round these parts. I have 4 or 5 on my stall.
Last night I went to the East Coast blues festival a few miles down the road, and let me tell ya there were HUNDREDS of young people wearing hats.the girls had those pimp hats that the rappers all wear now, but most of the guys had snap brim retro stuff we call bookies hats here, and plenty were...
Can you dig it? This treasure: "Airbreeze Cabana handwoven" which is exactly 7 1/8 my size, has the price still on the pad inside the crown at 45 shillings which puts it 40 years old at least..it's AS NEW NEVER WORN an old display one for sure..it was the best find on a 350 mile trip out in...
Ok I had some interest in these in another thread, but no-one actually closed the deal, there are 12 actual ties brand new, 35" long in three different patterns plus the amazing box. postage to the US is 10 bux airmail, and I want 50 for the 12 ties and box, considering I paid 30+ for them. That...
cutting edge
OK experts this is my father's old knife, he told me it was cavalry issue and the spike was for hoof maintenance, whereas an antique dealer told me it was naval issue and the thing was a miniature marlin spike, since it has a can opener it doesn't make sense to me to be naval issue...
swing it
Swing band! I used to know a few of the Pardon Me Boys gang way back when. Lennox Head is Millionaire's Row these days, I'm up near Murwillumbah on 30 acres about 20 minutes from the beach. We've got an Art Deco cinema here as well, which we've had some struggles to keep open.
The...
ageing beauty
Wow, big call.. it also doesn't have what I think Levi's called 'fruit pockets' when introduced to the denim jacket, so it would sit well with those old high-waist trousers Robert Ryan would wear
table
That's some sort of office or school table with a centre drawer, the timber edging is Silky Oak, a highly prized local timber that was popular in the 30's. I've planted several to make up for it. I used to work in demolition, so I have several old pieces from old offices etc.
more
the buttons were all gone too, as the threads had rotted, so it's fitted out with WW2/Korea Australian Army greatcoat buttons which burnish up nicely on the map in the centre, I had to back them up on the inside with some bakelite ones I had lying round to take stress off the old sewing...
mould
yep, just the cheap stuff and a shoebrush and rags, I usually use lemon juice for small spots that pop up here all the time due to the humidity, which is bad at the moment...but it's heresy to hope for too much dry weather in a farming area! Just gotta keep an eye on shoe and jacket...
Check out this 'dusky darling' from an early 50's rayon Fijian tourist shirt, propeller aircraft buzzing about as well, these are not as highly prized as the Hawaiian stuff, even though a lot harder to find, but still very nice if you can get them, I have a couple that easily stand up to...
