Everyday Women of the Golden Era

No typo. She's from the 1932 edition of the Philadelphia High School For Girls' yearbook. Apparently, she was a minor celebrity in the baseball world. There's always that ONE GIRL in my vintage yearbooks that has her hair slicked back, has on a suit jacket, and is into sports. ;)

;) I like her hair. I like hair that looks hard and fake.

Favorite Vintage stuff that just hangs around.

Ephemera. Namely magazines and sewing patterns. These are usually things that run their courses and then get tossed. I am grateful for the "hoarders" of the past that we have these things today :)

    You might be an Atavist.

lol Yesterday I was wearing a dress that I shortened just a touch too much and I felt really strange all day. Like I should have been on the boardwalk or something.

    You might be an Atavist.

If you feel "improper" if your skirt is a bit above the knee. If you can't go a single night without setting your hair. If you actually know how to do a fingerwave. If you feel it's important to keep up with the latest 1930s movie gossip and actually get excited and surprised by what...

Word. We never dry our clothes because 1. my husbad is a Brit and he never dried his clothes, and 2. it's bad for your clothes -- makes them shrink and stretch out faster. We use the clothes horse and a heater. Dry by morning! LizzieMaine: "If you've never quite gotten the hang of printed...

Everyday Women of the Golden Era

It's not unusual to walk in a graveyard in the USA and see these. They are especially common in Jewish cemeteries. More: Both died in a plane crash in the 40s. I See Dead People

Everyday Women of the Golden Era

Not to be morbid or anything (though I'm the most morbid person I know), but these "Everyday Women" come from gravestones. I can't help it -- I think these are the most beautiful portraits I've ever seen. She's my favourite. There's a great group on Flickr called "I See Dead...

    Transitioning to dresses

I wear Merrells everyday with socks and dresses. I hardly ever wear heels and never wear stockings. I really don't understand what you are asking -- you want to incorporate more skirts, but argue that you can't because you can't wear heels with it? Skirts and dresses are cute with flat shoes...

    The "Edison Rey-CORDS" announcer

Is it known who this man (men) is? You know him -- he announces all the songs at the beginning of all the Edison cylinders. I've always wondered about him (or them). Thanks.

    1920s OTR

I listened to the 1924 programme and the 50th anniversary of the phonograph. WOW!! The 1924 broadcast was very clear and not as "spooky" as I thought it would be, but that 50th anniversary! Fascinating and haunting!

    Transitioning to dresses

Flats and SOCKS with a skirt/dress is my daily uniform. Depends on what era you want, I guess. I want the 30s look. Long pencil skirts with bobby socks and flats make a cute 50s look.

    My problems with suits

I've noticed this A LOT about the Internet -- "suit" spelled "suite." I thought maybe it was the way it was spelled in a different country???

    "Oldies" radio stations

Here in Philly we have WRDV: http://www.wrdv.org/ When not listening to my iPod (which is better than ANY radio station) I tune into this.

How did they keep their hair-do's from week to week?

I wash and set my hair every single night. I guess they kept it set so long back in the day because they didn't have what was available to us today and probably had more time to maintain it. Today I can't see leaving a set in for more than one day because it only takes me 20 minutes at night...

    "Oldies" radio stations

"Oldies 98" here in Philly started in the 80s playing all 50s and 60s music. It replaced "WCAU FM" which was a pop station that played the Top 40 of the time. Not long ago, "Oldies98" was playing "Stray Cat Strut.". Lol I think they've come full circle! Personally, I can't wait for it to...
