I am interested in seeing this 'Heron-style' jacket - a couple of manufacturers appear to be making their own versions of this (including a forthcoming Bill Kelso), but I can't link to the website either.
Sold a few of my basses too a couple of years ago (a beautiful Ibanez MC924 in polar white), but drew the line at the Van Zallinge Z Bass and Hofner Violin.
Too much of a wrench... :-S
That's my favourite colour combo with the J-bass though. Looks grand...
Re. The buckle being inverted. Usually it is dished with the convex curve facing outwards.
If you take the straps out entirely, does the buckle not simply rotate so that the curve is outward facing? You can then replace the leather strap.
Here's the BR version (of the 37J1, rather than the 37J1B - see the differences in collar/pockets, etc.).
Not as neatly tailored (the 'best of the rest' IMO), but I've been trying to chase down a Zielinski in a 44 without success for a few weeks.
Edward, I have to revise that statement - I had intended to buy the RMJP 37J1B (Zielinski), but I have found it impossible to find a 44 in Japan - with lots of searching/contact with the suppliers and manufacturer. I shall now have to go with the Buzz Rickson 37J1 - not as smart, but good...
I know what you mean - I had to steel myself to tackle this several times before I went for it. I've messed about with a needle and thread/sewing machine (making shirts, spats etc. when I was younger), but nothing on this scale.
It also sometimes helps to be unaware of the full details of the...
Thank you, OK here's the scary bit - if you ever wondered what was in your A-1...
(make sure there's space behind that sofa before looking too closely).
Just an update to the OP (and with apologies for the poor quality photos (I'll try another set with a better camera later), but this is my .50 cal following surgery.
Don't look too closely for the missed stitches (this took a number of hours by hand and the result is not laser straight, but...
Bret, I fall between 42 and 44" in most VLJs.
This one allows me to wear a light sweater underneath comfortably.
The weight of the hide makes it well suited for cooler weather.
Cheers

This is the steerhide jacket - it's a lovely 1930s design (a Heron on the cheap ;) ).
Beautiful hide, subtle graining and Italian made. The leather is a similar weight to horsehide (2.1 kg), but very supple.
Cotton lining...
It's an interesting jacket, but I'm not really sold on it. I'm a bit of a stickler for one hide and mixtures of wool and leather (or grizzlies) don't really appeal. I can't get my head around the leather pocket flaps on wool, although I have seen period photos of a similar jacket style.
The...
I've just been informed that this beautiful garment is going to be mounted behind glass at Otto Kahn's former home, Oheka Castle on Long Island, NY - I couldn't be more delighted!
Good colour combo SJ, your call of course, but to my eye the sleeves are too long (easily remedied) and the torso still a bit short. If those are the trousers that you'd normally wear with the jacket.
