    Scouting anyone?

I stayed in through Explorers but never advanced above the rank of Star due to my inability to swim decently. It's a family trait. I float like a rock, just like my father.

The BWANA arrives! - First pics.

Oh dear, all I need is for Art to post a picture of that hat and another lid goes on the 'must have' list. The only thing that will save me is my intention to not go back to Africa again and that is shaky, to say the least. Maybe in a couple more years . . .

    Double-brim adventure hats

I think what you're really after is something like this, a double terai as worn by Stewart Granger c. 1950. Dashing, what?

    World War I posters

I once saw a picture of a WWII poster that if I ever came across one, I would hock the house and buy. It was entitled "This We'll Defend!" and showed around the edges, little vignettes of all the things about America that tug at the heartstrings. The Purple Mountain's Majesty, the Alabaster...

    Waterfall bedroom

Rather than yellow wood glue, veneer is best attached with a long-opening time epoxy and just weighting it on isn't sufficient. You need to either put together a vacuum clamp or make up some cauls and use really heavy duty bar clamps set as close together as you can fit them.

    Spectator Shoes

Tempting, isn't it? Unfortunately, I have stopped trying to purchase shoes by mail unless they are MTM. When Russell makes my moccasins they're labeled 9 1/2D but my Brooks walking sneakers are 12's! How is a man supposed to get a decent fit when the blasted manufacturers can't get their act...

    This hat is in denial!

Agreed. And as one with a advanced degree in art and a collection of orchids, I know lots of gay people. They're great fun and I love being around them. My wife thinks so, too.

    Three piece suits

Almost, but not quite, too dapper, that man. Well worn, sir.

How much cloth is required to make a suit?

Wow, that's some stout material. But you live in N. Yorkshire where I imagine it gets plenty chill in the winter. Out in my neck of the woods, a 340 gr. tweed pattern worsted is about as heavy as I can wear unless I want to restrict my tweed to December. Sometimes I might get a couple of...

    A Hobo Wedding

Fifteen K for a wedding is poor? My, how things have changed. We got married in my home church and my bride wore a gown she had sewn herself. Afterwards she cut it off above the knee as a pretty dress to wear. Her parents paid for the reception dinner and I rented a white dinner jacket. As...

    Show us your Guns!

I agree. Messing around with an old gun is best done with one that is far from cherry. This one should be for stroking every now and again.

    Show us your Guns!

I have one my daddy got right after WWII. It's in a wooden case. The son will get it eventually.

    Show us your Guns!

William Helmer wrote a book about them called The Gun That Made the Twenties Roar. It was his doctoral dissertation!

    Men of the Cloth

I'm bumping this up to the top again. More people need to watch this video. It's going to be a wonderful documentary. Two of my Italian great-uncles were tailors.

    Show us your Guns!

Ah! A hand blunderbuss, the flintlock version of the sawed off shotgun. And it's cute, too.

How much cloth is required to make a suit?

Andy agrees. Call it 4 meters to provide lots of wiggle room. And I agree that getting the three piece to start with is always the best policy. As Edward said, you don't have to wear the waistcoat if it's too warm but trying to add one later is a real challenge. Even if you can get the...

How much cloth is required to make a suit?

First I'm going to get rid of 4-6" off my spare tire! Then, I'll be saving up for a bespoke three piece Country suit in something greenish brown like Bookster's Glade. It comes in at 340 gr. the meter which is light enough to be a three season suit here in SoCal but isn't a true tweed weave...

Now Forming! the Campaign Hat Corps

I have a Resistol 4X beaver that I bought on sale (or rather my wife bought on sale for me) that I took to a hatter and had reblocked to fit my long-to-extra-long oval head and rebashed into a Montana peak. I rarely wear it though now that I'm learning to fly fish, it may see more use on the...
