Just an FYI, Texas A&M University’s ROTC department wears WW2-pattern uniforms, including service hats of the right design and fabric. I got one from a buddy passing through the area years ago and it’s my primary reproduction hat. I’m sure the surplus places in College Station could turn one up...
Just scored another Corona Standard typewriter, a 1941 model, this one Navy property marked off eBay:
Would have much rather had an Army marked machine but any military-marked one is very rare anyway! It's the all-caps version used for teletype and telegram work. The cariage and keys stick...
Back in WW2, they mostly only had either oil based paints or lead-based aviation paints to do these jackets. Some are so badly worn today that you can hardly tell there was ever art there.
I haven’t done one in a while, but I’ve painted plenty of A-2s in my day. I used a mixture of fabric paint...
Neat story, but I can't help but be reminded of a Belgian collector who found a mess kit with a guy's name on it in 1993 and spent a lot of (pre-internet) time tracking down the vet. He was alive and the European guy went all the way to him to give it back. Here’s the news item of what happened...
You are quite correct. I spent a lot of time researching these when I was stationed at Aberdeen proving Ground for a book I never got to writing (the odd thing is that there are next to NO really good reference books on US bazookas for some reason). The German rockets had much better penetration...
History Channel is becoming a lot like many of the other specialized cable networks. There appears to be a homogenizing of these networks who previously had a tight focus. And the overall focus shifts from time to time. Ever watch HC in the mornings or afternoons? They often show all the classic...
I saw “Revolutionary Road” again on HBO last night. I’ve watched it twice now and I was just as disturbed by it the second time around. After watching that, you have no faith in marriage (or even love for that matter). Then again, the main couple is clearly messed up to start with, but nobody in...
Yeah. I get really sick of hearing people talking about the Vietnam generation and how they never got a “victory parade.” Apparently, people must not know that there were next to NO victory parades after WW2. How can you have a parades when almost everyone served? Who’d watch it? The units...
You don't have to elaborate, I'm sure most of us with vintage vehicles can guess. I've snagged many a sleeve and sprayed oil and gear lube on many a shirt while working on my 1944 Willys MB.
My Jeep's treated canvas seats give off a nasty funk and I am sure when i drive it to be sure to wear...
I need to get a the rig on and get some photos, but I have a original 1940s shoulder holster, civilian made for a M-1911, I guess for a cop. It's a classic look and from time to time I've wanted to wear it with my WW2 war correspondent re-enacting impression, but there's no historical data to...
My 1944 Willys MB also has the hole. Original hand cranks are impossible to find and even the reproduction ones are tough to get as they never stay in stock for long. I’ve yet to find one, original or not. And forget finding the brackets for one. I’ve seen a Jeep cranked up with one and I’ve...
There are guys in the Friends of Willie and Joe group who do AAF, contact me offline. I assume you’ll be at the Olympia fly-in in June? Come by and say hello!
I might be interested in one myself. I’m tempted to point out the original photo shows a much larger image on the shirt, but those shirts are probably what we’d call a men’s small size now and they wore shirts much tighter then.
While not exactly dedicated to pur WW2 history, this is a great magazine, now a year old, published out of England. I'm a staff writer and their cartoonist: WW2 Re-enactor Magazine
Remember, the “crusher” look was just that, a look. Plenty of people took their service caps and molded them to look like that to emulate the look that was popular everywhere back then. I’m a life member of the 91st BG association and have been to 91st and 303rd BG reunions. I have talked with...
How about the 60's looks and dresses on women in so many WW2 movies made in the 60s? Did they think the 40s look wasn't good enough for a 40s movie? Watch especially, "Where Eeagles Dare," "The Dirty Dozen," and "Kelly's Heroes," and they don't even try to get the 40s look right on any women in...
Hmmm. This is prompting me to look into the cost. I have originals but they're named to a 8th AF vet so there's no way I'd wear them. These repros sure look nice!
I know you didn't mean it in this way, but some folks have used photos of that Jeep to support there are still WW2 Jeeps in a crate. But the Jeep here was a restored WW2 Jeep disassembled and a reproduction crate made to show what it would have looked like.
