    Stetson Bowler

Well looks like I can save some money by not buying the Stetson book but it's not going to be easy (or cheap) to find a 1910 MW catalog. John

I get "hit on" more often, now!

I'm an archaeologist by trade and although it's NOTHING like the Indiana Jones movies (never been chased by Nazis, found a gold idol, or had to rescue a beautiful woman - not once!) we do wear hats in the field. By the way, I've never see an Indy hat worn by a real archaeologist - not one in 25...

    Long oval/xtra long oval

If you look at old Sears Robuck or Monty Ward catalogs from the late 1890s to the 1930s, the largest size they list for hats is 7 1/2. I would think that hat shops around this same time period would carry the same range of sizes in retail hats. So 7 5/8 inch was not even available way back...

    Stetson Bowler

No luck on the Monty Ward catalog number. I noticed there is a book on the history of Stetson - anybody have this book and is it helpful in terms of dating their hats, including this derby? Also, for you viewing pleasure - apparently the Old West could be hard on a derby: John

    Stetson Bowler

Thanks for the education. Well it is definitely a "long oval" or it never would have fit my melon. The only markings I see are what I thought were "cle" and "offery" on the red and white Stetson tag - looking at the hand written letters "cle" could just be "lo" written with style as the "c"...

scotrace, That's a damn shame about your derby! That's why I don't lend stuff to friends or neighbors. If something like this happens then we can no longer be friends or friendly neighbors. "marked LO" ?? - you'll have to forgive me but what does LO stand for? And where would it be...

Since I plan on wearing my derby for SASS shoots and Cowboy action events the following is an interesting premise: http://asuitablewardrobe.dynend.com/2008/03/quotation-real-hat-of-old-west.html John

    Stetson Bowler

James and JtL, Thank for the confirmation opinions about the age - makes me feel a little easier. The more I look at the makers mark, the more I think feltfan might be right about the Montgomery Ward connection. The logo he found has an ampersand above the intertwined M and W and a Co...

    Stetson Bowler

feltfan - Monty Ward is a good guess. However, I was looking at the mark with the lion and unicorn and realized that it is a royal coat of arms - in fact, it is the royal coat of arms used by the UK sovereign in Scotland as the unicorn is on the left (first position) and the lion is on the...

    Stetson Bowler

No Stetsonologists want to wade in on this derby or bowler? I wonder if it ever had a liner? There is no evidence for one. It does have the small area of holes punched in the top for ventilation. If nobody has an opinion on the hat itself, how about how to clean the white spotted substance...

    Post New Hats Here!

Bowler Just scored this Stetson on epay - it has a few splatters of something on it but still beautiful: Suppose to be bought in 1909 - the "Grand Prize 1900 Paris" suggests this could be true. Also has the original Stetson tag under the sweatband with a reordering tag and a price tag...

    Stetson Bowler

I just bought this and I'd like to learn more about it. I did a search and didn't see anything pertinent. Here are some photos: The red tag under the sweatband has block 543, depth 50/4 and finish "cle offery" - the "To Duplicate Mention" tag has X78988 and the price tag...

Is there a standard brim size for 1911-style Campaign hats?

I've seen them anywhere from 2 1/2 inch to 4 inch. What's the "standard?" Thanks! John

    Bradford "Beaver 35"

Well I acquired a Bradford Hat a while back , part of their Western Collection and was originally purchased years ago at Porter's in Tucson. It's a Silverbelly color with a 3 inch brim and a 5 inch crown. It's a nice soft hat along the lines of an Open Road. Resistol bought out Bradford...

    Favorite cigar & hat combination...

Vintage Resistol, Bailey or Stetson cowboy with a Padron '64 Anniversario pyramid, churchill or robusto. You might add a glass of nice single malt in there (as TimBer suggested) or a good vintage port. Now that's living. John

Hat size - can you shrink a hat to fit?

Did a search and didn't find anything. I've got my eye on a Resistol hat that is one size too big (normally they are all too small) - it's a 4X beaver felt - age? I would guess 60s-70s. I like the color or I would wait for a suitable size to come along. Would a hat like this be "shrinkable?"...

    Stetson Fifteen 3X quality

I know the whole X-thing has been discussed before but I saw this hat that has "Fifteen" on it but also 3X. This looked like an older hat (pre-1960s) and I'm guessing "15" is a reference to the price and 3X is the beaver content, or is it vice-versa? I need opinion about what kind of overall...

Anybody know the history of Bradford Hats?

I know they were bought by Resistol in the 60s and then Hatco acquired Resistol but what about before this? Thanks! John

    Hat Stretcher?

Hi folks, I'd like to buy a hat stretcher but I really don't know what type to buy. There are some nice ones on ebay but it's a little confusing. If they are marked "6 3/4" does that mean that is the maximum size or minimum size or something else? Are the wood ones the best with the twist...

    Determining Felt quality?

Can anyone please give me a guide to how one judges the grade or quality of the felt used to make a hat. It is density, softness, bendability (if that is even a word), etc.? I put this over on the SBS too. Thank you. John
